While my dog Kelly snoozed in her cozy little bed in the living room, I watched a television news report of the recent earthquake in Chile.

In addition to the tragic human suffering, my heart went out to the homeless dogs and other pets displaced after the disaster.

The stallion huddled in the corner of the small paddock, his crusty hide sagging from his bones. His owner had said the horse was a half-Arabian pinto, but I could barely make out the two-color coat beneath the muck.

His hair was matted and mud-caked, his mane dirt-streaked. I approached cautiously, but the horse took no notice. He just picked listlessly at a clump of hay. No wonder he’s being offered for free, I thought. No one would want a horse like this.

My nephew Gordy had a surprise for me.

He has been retired for a couple of years but retired only from a business career. He spends his time in his workshop or he's off to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. “You should have been a carpenter,” I said.

“But I am,” Gordy replied as he led me down to the basement and directed me to a small table he had made. “It's yours,” he said.
