It all happened so fast. My best friend Sandy telephoned from Florida to ask if I would consider being godmother to her second child, a son.

Godmother! I was honored. I was flattered. I'd never been asked to be a godmother before.

"Sure," I replied easily.

"You don't have to answer right away," Sandy said. "Being a godparent is a serious responsibility. Maybe you'd like to think it over for a few days, maybe even pray about it."

A Surprising Anniversary

Saturday was my parents' 60th wedding anniversary.

My four siblings and I reserved the fellowship hall at their former church in Dallas for a come-and-go reception in their honor.

I prayed it would be more than a nice little reception. Since moving from Dallas to east Texas, Mother and Daddy had suffered several years of serious health problems in a new town with few friends. Mother deeply needed to reconnect with her old ones.

My nephew Gordy had a surprise for me.

He has been retired for a couple of years but retired only from a business career. He spends his time in his workshop or he's off to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. “You should have been a carpenter,” I said.

“But I am,” Gordy replied as he led me down to the basement and directed me to a small table he had made. “It's yours,” he said.

It was my Uncle Davey calling again.

You'd think I'd paid off his mortgage or bought him a new car the way he's always calling to express his gratitude. The thing is, I haven't really done anything for him. It's usually the other way around.

Though I don't remember the reason, I do remember how angry I was at my mother-in-law.

We had clashed repeatedly and I didn't want to forgive her.

Then I had an idea. I decided to give her a glass figurine that was one of my favorites, a spaniel that looked like my own beloved dog. I mailed it with a note that read, "I hope you enjoy this as much as I have."
