Each wounded veteran forges their own path to recovery, but a growing number are discovering the therapeutic potential of kayak fishing.
Heroes on the Water, a program dedicated to teaching injured military personnel how to fish from a kayak, says its offerings have grown so popular it is expanding to all major trauma centers run by the U.S. Army.
The organization says that practicing the sport helps participants relax, disconnect from the stresses of combat, and take a break from the intensity of rehabilitation.
More than 130 service members have taken part in Heroes on the Water's guided fishing trips so far. The group arranges most outings on private waters, which offer a serene setting undisturbed by motor boats.
Rosalinda Babin, the mother of a young soldier injured by gunfire in the Middle East, told the Dallas News that Heroes on the Water events allow participants to overcome their physical challenges.
"Looking out at the lake, there was no way to differentiate between the able-bodied and the disabled heroes—a huge therapeutic moment for the parent of a wounded warrior," she said.
