Are concerns about the uncertain job market taking a toll on your positive attitude and contributing to stress?
Micah McCreary, a professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University, says that although finding balance may be more difficult in the current economy, there are steps you can take to stay calm and healthy.
"Prevention is critical. The key is to start taking care of yourself now, before you lose a job," he explains. "Focus on what you find pleasure in and find less expensive ways to do those activities."
Devoting more time to family and relationships is a great way to clear your head and relax, McCreary says. He suggests setting aside one day a week for a family get-together, as well as having fitting in one-on-one time with each child.
You can also turn to trusted friends who have a knack for cheering you up, he recommends. McCreary calls these people who have a talent for putting things in perspective "healing personalities."
When you are alone, make sure you exercise—even if it's just a short walk outside—and keep participating in the hobbies you enjoy, he adds.
