Eleven-year-old Heather Miller has spent the past year living with cancer.
But a unique friendship with one of her sports heroes has provided a bright spot as she undergoes treatment for the disease.
Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu first met Heather when the Steelers made a visit to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Children's Hospital, where Heather was undergoing chemotherapy.
Since then, the two have struck up a friendship, spending hours together playing video games whenever the young girl is in the hospital.
And, after the team won the Super Bowl in February, Polamalu even sent the young girl a text message to share his excitement, the Today show reports.
More recently, when Heather's family learned her cancer had returned and she would need further surgery, Polamalu stepped in to offer his support. The Steelers invited Heather and her parents to watch them train for their first game of the season, as well as to watch the game itself.
"He's one of the angels God's put in our path," Heather's mother Wendy told the Today show. "He's done things for her that my husband and I can't do."
