According to some, the first 24 years of Jay Hewitt's life couldn’t be considered "normal."
But the 41-year-old Hewitt, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1991, says he doesn't fall into that kind of thinking. As an elite Ironman triathlete, he refuses to let diabetes hold him back.
"I race to prove that diabetes cannot stop me from achieving my goals, and I am honored if I inspire others to overcome any obstacle to achieve their dreams," he writes on his website.
Although diabetes isn't easy on anyone, the young children with the disease and their brave parents are a true source of inspiration for him, Hewitt says.
In an essay on the DiabetesHealth website, the three-time member of the U.S. National Team for Long Course Triathlon says his admiration for children who manage the potentially life-threatening condition on a daily basis is a force for good in his own competition.
Whenever he's running a race and thinks he might not make it, Hewitt thinks about "the kids with diabetes who may be watching me, and their parents who do so much to take care of them, and I am inspired."
