A music video currently sweeping the internet is serving as a source of inspiration to millions of viewers who see it as a testament to global unity.

Playing for Change gathers dozens of little-known musicians from around the world and records them playing classic or folk songs. The catch? None of them have ever met.

Los Angeles-based producer Mark Johnson traveled the world, recording each performer individually and then spliced them together to create a rich aural tapestry.

The clip that began attracting attention to Playing for Change begins with musician Roger Ridley, playing his guitar and singing "Stand By Me" on the streets of Santa Monica, California.

As the video progresses, 34 additional singers and musicians are added into the mix, each providing their unique contribution to the iconic song by Ben E. King. So far, the clip has received more than 10 million hits on YouTube.

"Playing for Change was born out of the idea that we have to come together as a human race and that music is the best way to do this," Johnson explains.
