Pastor swims English Channel

Reverend Mike Solberg of Rockford, Illinois, first visited Angola in 2005.

He was moved by the faith and hope exhibited by people living in extreme poverty.

With the residents of that African country in mind, Solberg decided to embark on a major athletic challenge: swimming the English Channel.

On his blog, Solberg writes of his goal to raise $50,000 to build a school in Waku Kungo and help the next generation of Angolan children.

Why swimming? Solberg says he has always felt that "life was created in water," and he also admits that it is "kind of fun to do the impossible—or at least the ridiculously challenging."

On September 19, Solberg finished his journey from Samphire Hoe, England to Wissant, France, in 13 hours and 31 minutes.

By completing the 21-mile swim, he also raised $30,000—and he hopes to add even more to the total in the coming weeks and months.

Crossing across the English Channel is considered to be one of the greatest long-distance feats one can accomplish while swimming.
