CNN.com reports that 2-year-old Dax Locke has been living with cancer for a majority of his short life, and that leukemia may take him before the holidays.
His parents decided to brighten his spirits by putting up Christmas lights outside of their home, as their son loves glowing objects. Locke also opens a present each day under a Christmas tree that's been up for the past few weeks.
Neighbor Trish Hurtgen took notice and decided to support the family's efforts by putting up her own lights and encouraged other neighbors to do the same. The neighborhood also decorated a huge tree in front of the Locke's house while they were at the aquarium.
Hurtgen and her husband made the Decorate for Dax project international by setting up a website, where people can decorate their homes and send their pictures to Dax.
"It's bringing out the best in people during a very difficult time," Hurtgen told the Washington Times-Reporter. "Of course, we all still pray for a miracle, but his parents are cherishing this time by dancing singing and playing with him as much as they can."
