Mystery Shopper

The shopping cart full of food came from nowhere

Bitter and cold outside and not much warmer inside this holiday season. My husband had just been laid off and was in the living room looking through the want ads. “I’m going to run to the store while the kids are napping,” I called to him.

In the car I slumped behind the steering wheel. God, only a small miracle will keep my family fed. We were barely making ends meet.

Christmas music played inside the supermarket. I chose only the items we desperately needed and had just enough to cover the bill. At least I didn’t have to put anything back. A small miracle—just as I’d asked.

Walking back toward the car, I hugged my bag of groceries to me. Snow blew around the mostly empty parking lot. The wind picked up fiercely. A shopping cart rolled toward me and I stopped it with my free hand. The cart was full. I looked inside. It seemed to contain all the food my family liked. All the things we couldn’t afford. A card on top said, “A Christmas Gift for You.”

I looked around. Through the wind-blown snow, I thought I saw a figure. “Is this your runaway cart?” I called.

But the figure disappeared into the snow. “Thank you!” I yelled. “And merry Christmas.” A season of small miracles, and big.

Beautiful story. Years ago,

Beautiful story. Years ago, when my children were small and things were tight, I prayed to the Blessed Mother, asking her help before I went to the grocery store. Like you, I put only the bare necessities in my basket. While I stood in line at the check-out, I was taken out of line by a clerk to the next, newly opened register. She rang up my purchases and another clerk bagged my order. After they processed my order, they closed the register. When I got home and unpacked the bags, there were extra items added, like an extra gallon of milk, and bread that I hadn't put in the cart, and couldn't have come from an order before or after me. I checked the receipt, and the extra items weren't on there. A gift from heaven?
