He didn’t have to say it. Alabama running back Mark Ingram didn’t have to mention his father, Mark Ingram, Sr., in his December 11 Heisman Trophy Award acceptance speech. People would have understood.

After all, this was a triumphant day for Ingram, a solid student who became the first Heisman Trophy winner in the storied history of Alabama, home to such legendary players as Joe Namath, Bart Starr and Ken Stabler. A tough, determined young man who bulled his way to 1,542 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns this season, both school records. On this of all days, why bring up the bad stuff?

The bad stuff was pretty grim. While Ingram stepped to the podium of New York’s Marriott Marquis Hotel, his father, Mark Ingram, Sr., watched on TV from the Queens Private Correction Facility, across the East River, several miles away.
