Two high school seniors were inspired to start a fundraiser to help an impoverished teen in Belize go to high school after they heard the story of how her mother was forced to drop out of school, get married and have children at the age of 14.
Annie Stoddard and Kayla Shelly had traveled to Punta Gorda, Belize, last summer as part of a mission trip with their high school, Chaminade Julienne in Dayton, Ohio.
After hearing Senida Bo talk about her mother's hardship growing up as a young mother, they were determined to ensure the young girl did not have a similar fate, according to the Dayton Daily News.
The two girls have started the Senida Project, with the help of Loose Change to Loosen Chains to pay for Bo and her friend to attend high school. They've been asking their peers to donate the spare change they have instead of spending it on soda at lunch.
"Sometimes we don't want to get up in the morning, or take a test," Shelly told the news provider. "These people would do anything to get an education. It makes such a difference in terms of a successful future."
The Loose Change to Loosen Chains initiative is part of the International Justice Mission, and is led by student organizations, according to the program's website.
