Kate Atwood was determined to go on with being a kid after her mother passed away from cancer when Atwood was 12, so she decided to throw herself into sports.

While Atwood said she was always active as a child, she surrounded herself with as many clubs and friends as possible to fill the void that had emotionally rocked her.

After volunteering with a camp for children going through a similar loss she had, Atwood decided to create her own organization, Kate's Club, a non-profit group which uses buddy volunteers to offer a positive attitude and emotional support to children who had lost a parent.

"Kids need social support, as well as emotional support," Atwood explained. "Grief isn't always visible, a lot of people are surprised by the number of children who have lost a parent."

Atwood also recently released a book dedicated to helping parents empower their children after they've been struck with the loss of a loved one.
