Obama called the team personally to thank them

The University of Kentucky's Wildcats Basketball team recently held a Hoops for Haiti telethon that raised more than $1 million for the thousands of people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

Team members past and present, as well as Calipari, answered phones as people placed bids on everything from autographed pictures of the team to a dinner with actress Ashley Judd, who is a fan of the Wildcats. That meal went for a reported $98,100.

As a result of their charitable efforts, their head coach, John Calipari, received a special thank you phone call from President Barack Obama, according to the Washington Post.

"I just want to let you guys know that I am very, very proud of what you guys did," Obama told the team, according to the news provider. "It shows a lot of character and I hope that carries over."
