This month, residents of homeless shelters in 25 states had the opportunity to take a break from their troubles and enjoy an all-American feast.

Thanks to the efforts of nonprofit arts company eyeBLINK, the 2009 Pizza for the Hungry event saw 2,500 pizzas provided to homeless families across the country. The celebration is funded by the donations of both businesses and individuals, with $1 able to provide two slices to feed a shelter guest.

During the parties, local musicians also visit the shelters to supply entertainment and add to the festive atmosphere. The event is in its third year and continues to grow, adding more locations each time.

The organizers say the get-togethers create a sense of community and highlights the need to eradicate hunger in U.S.

But most importantly, according to Obaid Kadwani, the creator of the project, its mission is to provide inspiration and joy for those who need it most.

"In tough times, you need hope. You need a moment when you can forget your cares," he explained. "So we do that. We donate food, we provide music, people are happy and clapping and dancing."
