Bruce and Sarah Gannaway met in college where Bruce was in the ROTC.
“For as long as I’ve known Bruce, he’s been wearing a uniform,” Sarah says. Bruce has been in the Army for over 11 years, serving in Korea and Iraq.
On December 21, 2007, early in his second tour of duty in Iraq, Bruce stepped on a roadside bomb. “I remember a flash of light at my feet and feeling a lot of heat and a huge wave of pain.”
Bruce lost his left leg below the knee and injured his left arm. Sarah was able to meet him at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on Christmas Day in 2007. “Seeing him was the best Christmas present I’d ever received,” she says.
They’ve spent over a year in and out of Walter Reed, where Bruce has had repeated surgeries and has learned to walk on a prosthesis. In addition to the doctors and medical staff that have helped them at the hospital, they’ve also had the comfort of reading a familiar magazine.
“I grew up with GUIDEPOSTS,” Sarah says. “And there in the darkest hour of my life, I found copies in a rack at the end of a hospital corridor. I took one back to Bruce’s room and read it cover to cover, taking encouragement from seeing God at work in other people’s lives.”
