Last week’s tragedy at Fort Hood in Texas was a blow struck at all decent people but one that landed most heavily, I think, on members of the military present and, like me, past.
I spent my whole career in the army, retiring several years ago with the rank of Major General, Chief of Chaplains. I know Fort Hood well. It is the single largest U.S. military installation in the world, home to nearly 50,000 soldiers and 120,000 family members.
Yet it is a tight community and this horrific event has sent shock waves through it, reverberations that will not be stilled for a long time. Soldiers and their families will need our help.
I heard the news while in transit to an event in California with GUIDEPOSTS supporters and donors. Since my retirement I have helped with GUIDEPOSTS’ military outreach, which provides free literature and support to U.S. military personnel and their families, and especially to the dedicated chaplains who serve them.
GUIDEPOSTS and ANGELS ON EARTH magazines, and Outreach booklets like A Prayer for Every Need, How to Handle Tough Times, Trust, Hope, and Courage have been of enormous help to the chaplains during these years of war.
GUIDEPOSTS has supplied millions of pieces of literature and Fort Hood has been the single largest recipient. We are currently shipping 120,000 additional inspirational booklets to the base along with thousands of copies of Daily Guideposts 2010. Chaplains I have been in contact with are enormously grateful for the support that we could not provide without your help.
I am writing to thank you and to ask for your continued support. Soldiers and their families are in crisis and we owe them all that we can give, especially on this Veterans Day. Above all that includes your prayers.
