Gone are the days in which time-strapped American families would order takeout at the end of the day or rush off to a restaurant as a way of feeding everyone without fuss.

In the current recession, many households are trying to cut back on spending—and a byproduct of this trend is a resurgence in home-cooked meals and family dinners.

Not only can cooking from scratch save money, but using fresh ingredients encourages healthy eating. Parents have an opportunity to teach kids about nutrition, as well as helping them develop valuable skills for the future.

Cooking and eating together gives families the opportunity to let go of the stresses of the day, catch up on each other's lives and create lasting memories. In these uncertain times, these rituals could be a way of finding balance.

Denise Clark of Savannah, Georgia told the Savannah Morning News that family dinners are "about being in each other's company."

"Working on something together to feel like a team rather than sitting there and watching TV and doing nothing," she said. "The whole family is joining in and taking care of each other."
