The Extra Present

Why would I buy more than one gift?

Everything on my holiday shopping list was crossed off—except one special gift.

My husband owned a convenience store. I wanted to get my nephew some play food so he could understand what his uncle did all day. But time was running out and I hadn’t yet found the food.

At last I saw a box high on a shelf at the toy store. An employee climbed onto a ladder. “Yep,” he said, “play food. How many boxes?”

“Just one, please.”

“How many?”

Odd question, I thought. What child needs more than one big box of play food? “One,” I repeated.

Then I heard a woman’s voice: “Get another one for the little girl.”

I turned, but there was no woman in the aisle. I give up, I thought. “I’ll take two.”

On Christmas Day a family member showed up with an unexpected guest. A little girl my nephew’s age. A little girl who had a present waiting just for her.
