One of the hardest things about my divorce was not seeing my husband Dennis’s Aunt Mimi on a daily basis.
She’d lived with us for many years. Mimi had lost the use of both her legs to polio when she was seven, but she never let it get her down.
Her faith and spirit kept her functioning at 90 better than most able-bodied people function at 70.
One night, a few months after I moved out, I had a dream where I stood under a warm blue sky in a meadow full of wildflowers.
A young woman ran up to me and grasped my hands. We swung around and around in a circle laughing.
I will never forget how pleased this woman appeared to be dancing with me.
I woke up to the ringing phone. “Katherine,” Dennis said, “Aunt Mimi passed away in the night.”
Immediately I knew who the young woman in my dream was: Mimi. Not the 90-year-old Mimi, but a younger, vibrant Mimi, who had full use of her legs.
She was now dancing with the angels in heaven. How could I be too sad about her passing? Mimi and I had the best good-bye I could have ever asked for.
