Francis of Assisi created the first nativity scene nearly 800 years ago to help us visualize the drama and beauty of the first Christmas.
Today, the practice has spread across the globe, always as a call to remember the true reason we celebrate Christmas.
There are few Christian traditions that are more universal, more moving or that draw us so close together in common spiritual purpose.
So take a moment to admire some of the best nativity scenes the world has to offer, and remember that whether the crèche you see this year is in Afghanistan or California, whether it is a live scene or comprised of delicate figurines, whether it is visited by thousands or appreciated by just a single family, that crèche is a profound reminder of the great gift that God gave to man, as it was always meant to be.
