Of all the holiday traditions in my family, my absolute favorite is Christmas cookie-eating.

After Christmas dinner, I usually circle the dessert table a few times, eyeing each colorful cookie platter, trying to decide which ones I want. Cake-like lemon drops with sugary frosting, chewy pignoli nut almond cookies, spicy, gumdrop-dotted gingerbread people and creamy spritz cookies with green and red sprinkles.

When I’ve fully scouted the possibilities, I make my move—which usually means piling my half-sized dessert plate with as many cookies as would fit.

Then, one by one, I devour them, savoring their rich, seasonal flavors, like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and ginger.

Lisa Zwirn, author of Christmas Cookies: 50 Recipes to Treasure for the Holiday Season, incorporates those "winter" flavors in her Gingerbread People, Viennese Crescents and Eggnog Cookies!
