Hearing about the devestation in Haiti prompted Simpson to raise funds

While some celebrities are making news for their charitable efforts concerning the devastating earthquake in Haiti, one little boy is getting recognition for raising more than $240,000.

Charlie Simpson, a 7-year-old boy from west London, wanted to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti by riding around South Park as many times as he could. Hoping to raise 500 pounds, Simpson was surprised when his JustGiving webpage received more than 150,000 pounds in donations, according to CNN.

Writing about his mission, Simpson said he was doing it because "there was a big earthquake and loads of people lost their lives." Simpson was looking for money to go towards supplies like food and clean water.

Because of his efforts, Simpson is now getting national attention in his country from prominent figures such as Simon Cowell to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Cowell told the Daily Mirror that Simpson was able to accomplish something most adults could not do.

"He's the most astonishing fundraiser in the country," he said. "There aren't many adults who have ever raised so much money."
