Hello, angel friends.
At the time I began writing books about angels (1992), there were only a few other writer/researchers working on this topic.
One of the earliest and best was John Ronner, a former newspaper reporter who eventually wrote several books on angels.
One of John's most researched book, Know Your Angels (Mamre Press) includes questions that you’ve probably never asked. See how well you do:
1. Who were the Angels of Mons?
In August 1914, during the first World War, many stories circulated from soldiers seeing angels on battlegrounds in western Europe.
There were reports of white figures, angels on horseback, and nurses who treated wounds then mysteriously disappeared.
The largest contingent of soldiers saw angels during the Battle of Mons in Belgium when the Allied Forces were retreating. The troop of angels allegedly formed a barrier so the Allied Forces could reach safe ground.
2. How many archangels are named in the Bible?
If you read the King James Bible (the Protestant version) you will come across only two "named” archangels, Michael and Gabriel.
The Catholic Bible has several additional books, and one of these is The Book of Tobit, where the Archangel Raphael plays a dual role of healer and caretaker of travelers.
Although supplementary literature mentions many other archangels, including Uriel, these are the only three actually named in Scripture.
3. When were angels created?
It is believed that angels were the very first creation. In early tradition there is mentioned a great war between the good angels and those who wished to be as powerful as God, the bad angels.
They quarrel, and a third of the angels leave heaven and encourage evil upon the earth.
In the Book of Job (Chapter 38), angels appear to be delighted when they saw God's creation laid out in front of them. In Genesis, after Adam and Eve were sent out of Paradise, two angels were assigned to guard the garden lest they try to get back in.
4. Angels are usually popular at Christmas.
Can you recall every time angels are mentioned during the Christmas gospel?
Have you ever tried reconstructing the Christmas story and leaving the angels out? Check on this one, and send us the answer!
