Somehow I wasn’t surprised when I plugged in our angel Christmas tree topper and it wouldn’t light.
It had worked fine last year, but now it was burnt out. Just like me, I thought. I’d just had major surgery—a successful operation, but exhausting nonetheless. I simply didn’t have the energy for a Christmas celebration. It had been hard enough to drag myself back to work and stay on top of daily chores.
On my way home the next day I stopped at the drugstore and picked out a pretty new topper. But when I got home, it wouldn’t light either!
I complained to my husband. “Don’t worry,” John said. “I’ll go back and exchange it.”
While he was gone I opened a big box of ornaments. I sat on the floor and spread them all out around me. Angels, angels, angels—I’d forgotten how many angel ornaments I’d collected over the years.
“What’s going on?” John asked when he returned.
“I guess I’m surrounded by angels.”
“Well, here’s one more,” he said. He plugged in the new topper—and it lit up. Just like my face. I felt renewed and ready for a Christmas celebration.
After all, angels were waiting.
