Setting the Scene

Every Christmas the children rearrange this grandmother's Nativity figurines into various poses.

My angel collection comes out at Christmastime and threatens to overtake the entire house. You see, I'm the proud owner of 29 Nativities, including a Precious Moments set inherited from my mother; an intricate snow-globe Nativity; and one with a Native-American theme, complete with tepee, an eagle, a wolf and a bear.

Nativities aren't the only things I collected over the years. My eight children took over the house year-round! They all have families of their own now and descend upon us—happily—for the holidays.

When my grandchildren are here, they play with the Nativity figurines. One of my favorite arrangements is when they position Joseph closer to the baby "to give Mary a break." Other times they crowd the animals up against the manger so they can witness the miracle inside. Regardless, the scene the children create always revolves around the tiny infant.

I can't wait to see what new interpretations of this historic moment my grandchildren—all 17 of them—have in store this year. Twenty-nine loving Nativity scenes and one big loving family. For me, that's Christmas.
