My grandchildren worried about all the time I spent on the road. “Aren’t you afraid when you travel?” they wanted to know. My job as a counselor covers three counties and several hundred miles a month.
“Oh, no,” I answered. “God puts three angels in the backseat of my car. They’re so happy to come along on my trips, they giggle the whole way.”
The kids couldn’t help giggling at my story, but the more I thought about it the more I decided, Why couldn’t God put three angels in my backseat?
Just like the angels I keep at home, my car companions became a real presence to me. They might look something like these wooden gardening angels I’ve had for years. My best friend even named them: Shirley, Goodness and Mercy.
Not once in all my journeys have I had a bit of car trouble. I feel safe while I admire the beauty of Texas. Fields of sunflowers and bluebonnets. Weathered barns. Cows grazing in green pastures.
My grandchildren know I enjoy my trips. When they’re old enough to drive, they want a trio of giggling angels too. A good idea for anyone!
