The Angel Bear
My granddaughter's gift for her great-grandmother was a gift for us all.
Brittany squeezed my hand as we walked through the hospital lobby. I was taking my 6-year-old granddaughter to see her great-grandmother, Nana, for the last time.
On the way to the elevator, the gift shop caught her eye. "Let's get Nana something to help the angels make her feel better." Brittany knew her Nana was dying, and we'd talked about angels and the comfort they bring.
We looked around the gift shop. Brittany spotted a white bear with sparkling fur and wings. "Isn't it beautiful, Meemaw?" We bought the angel bear for Nana and went up to her room. Brittany proudly presented her gift. When Nana died soon after, I gave the angel bear back to Brittany. That was the first bear in my granddaughter's collection.
"I think everyone in the family should have one," Brittany said one day. "Since we all have angels with us. Right, Meemaw?"
"Right, Brittany." Now she has angel bears for all of us. A Brittany bear, a Meemaw bear, a Peepaw bear, and ones for her mother, father, and two brothers. Soon her collection will outnumber our family, just like the angels do.
The other day I wondered aloud to my granddaughter, "Who else could do the work of angels?" Brittany smiled and said, "That's easy, Meemaw. Us!"
