It all started with a lemonade stand and the dream of a young patient living with cancer.
In 2000, 4-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Scott decided to set the goal of raising money for cancer research through her lemonade stand. At the time, her purpose was to help her doctors find "a cure for all kids with cancer."
While Alex's little stand garnered some attention, she felt it wasn't enough. So in 2004, Alex proposed a new goal: to hit $1 million in fundraising. When she was asked by her parents how she thought this was possible, she told them "if people all around the country hold lemonade stands and send in their money, I think I can do it."
Alex's positive attitude inspired thousands of volunteers around the country to put up their own lemonade stands, which eventually helped the young fundraiser to reach her monetary goal. Soon after, Alex lost her battle with childhood cancer on August 1, 2004.
In her memory, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation was established and continues to raise money for cancer research.
