About 10 years ago, the president and CEO of a California animal center decided to go out on his own and use a positive attitude to convince people to adopt a pet during the holiday season.
At the time, people were telling Mike Arms that pet adoptions during the holiday season would only lead to the animals getting returned, KFSM.com reports.
"But the conventional wisdom was in reality an urban myth," he told the news provider. "The data actually shows that pets adopted at holiday time are even more likely to stay with families."
Since Home 4 the Holidays started in 1999, the amount of pet adoptions between Halloween and Christmas has risen. Part of that success comes from a partnership Arms found with pet food company Iams. Last year it was reported that more than 1.2 million pets found homes during this time period.
Aside from helping with publicity, Iams also features adoption success stories on its site, where families have contributed inspirational stories about how their dog made "the perfect Christmas gift" and has become part of the family.
