Dad's Pitch

When I was pitching in the major leagues I was known as "Knucksie," because I threw a knuckleball. You don't actually throw a knuckleball with your knuckles.

But that's just one of the many strange things about the pitch. Few pitchers can consistently control it, and fewer still can make a living throwing it.

Yet that's exactly what my brother Joe and I both did. We credit our dad. He's the one who taught me the knuckler—and just about every important thing I know.

Out of Empty Nest Valley

To our left, the Santa Lucia Mountains jutted into the cornflower blue western sky.

To our right, the Pinnacles Mountains rose likewise into the cloudless east.

And rushing alongside our tour bus windows in a blur of emerald, teal, mint and kelly green was the verdant flat patchwork quilt of California’s Salinas Valley.

The tour guide’s microphone crackled with upbeat commentary.

Florida Children Told Not to Give Up on Dreams

Some of the children who have benefited from Florida's Food Brings Hope initiative received a special visit from state Governor Charlie Crist, who spoke about the power of thinking positive.

The program, which was launched two years ago, helps families with children who are hungry because of homelessness or poverty.
