I skated out to center stage, or rather center ice, 10,000 people cheering me on at The Forum in L.A. I know it sounds hammy, but I’m a performer, and all my life center stage is where I’ve wanted to be. This was my comeback performance—my comeback from testicular cancer. Everyone, including me, wanted to see if I was as good as I’d been before the cancer. It had been 14 years since I won the gold medal at the Sarajevo Olympics. My own expectations were probably higher than they should’ve been.

Our Golden Girl

I write books for a living, but it took a dog to teach me what living was all about.

In the end she taught me about dying too, and how to let go of something you couldn’t imagine going on without.

Her name was Trixie and my wife, Gerda, and I would never be the same after she came into our lives.

Trixie was an inspiration. She restored our sense of wonder. She made us laugh and at times made us weep in anguish.

It was a September evening in 1964, only hours after my husband Warren's funeral.

When the children went to bed, I sat in the tall fireside chair that had at one time graced the parlor of my mother's childhood home. I had to be alone. I was beyond tears.

This is the rest of my life, I thought. I knew how much the children would miss Warr. My heart ached for them. I knew about all the birthdays and holidays and graduations when they'd see other kids celebrating with their fathers. I knew because I'd been there.

You could always tell when Christmas was coming on The Hill, the Italian-immigrant neighborhood in St. Louis where I grew up—the Nativity scene appeared on the lawn of the rectory at St. Ambrose, our church.

The other sure sign was the store windows. They looked a little fancier, with sprayed-on "snow" and the best items on display. It was there, in one of those windows the year I was 10, that I saw the greatest thing I'd ever laid eyes on.
