Oil and water, that’s us, I thought when I met Teri 20 years ago.

She was outspoken. I’m reserved. Teri didn’t wear makeup; I wouldn’t leave home without it.

Back in the day, Teri loved hitting the road on her Harley. I preferred curling up with a good book. We’re just so different, I thought.

Until I went through a devastating divorce. I passed the days in a fog, sobbing for hours when I got home from work. Friends and family called, worried.

The Goodie Basket

The moving truck pulled up to the house next door. Another family settling into our cozy subdivision outside Oklahoma City. Except that after three years it didn't feel so cozy to me, a single woman in my thirties, surrounded by families and young married couples.

I'd lost hope in being able to relate to my neighbors. Instead, I focused on my life at work. Still, I walked over and introduced myself to my new neighbors, a couple with two little girls. "Hi, I'm Stephanie."

A Friend for Micah

The back door banged open.

“Mommy, Mommy,” called our five-year-old daughter, Micah, coming in from running errands with her father, and racing toward the kitchen. “Daddy and I saw a lost dog!” she exclaimed.

“We already have a dog,” I wanted to say. As if on cue, Princess, our pug, came running.

Michael followed Micah into the kitchen. “I told Micah that dinner was waiting and if the dog didn’t have a home it would still be there when we finished.”

Jennie—She Taught Me to Love Spring

Jennie and I met in night school. She had lost her husband, and her daughter was no longer home. My only child, a son, was in college, and my husband had encouraged me to finish work on my degree.

After Jennie and I had completed the required courses, we started teaching in the same school. Frequently we had lunch together.

Haitian Churches Keep the Faith

In the Greater Boston area of Massachusetts—thousands of miles from the epicenter of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that crumbled buildings in Haiti on January 12—Haitian churches have become a hub for a large community to grieve and confront their spirituality and faith.

Not only have many of the churches expanded their roles as social and spiritual centers, but most have assumed emergency responsibilities as well, caring for mourners, raising money to send to relatives still in Haiti and consoling earthquake survivors, the Boston Globe reports.

Airport Angel

It was the band trip of a lifetime for my son—marching in Florida's Gator Bowl. The day before the bus left, I went to help Jeremy pack. He was sitting on his bed. "I feel crummy, Mom." I pressed my hand to his forehead. He was really burning up.

"But, Mom, I can't miss this trip!" he said.

The day after the bus left, Jeremy felt better. "There's still time to get him on a plane," my husband said. We booked an evening flight.

Letters from a Paw Pal

I had never felt so low-down, guilty and inadequate in my life.

It seemed as if my car were being dragged along in the wake of the ambulance I was following. It was taking my friend Alice to a nursing home she had begged me to keep her out of earlier that morning.

Even though I was a nurse, there was no way I could care for her in my home or hers. Now in her eighties, Alice needed around-the-clock specialized care. She was connected to a respirator by a tracheostomy tube and fed through a stomach tube.

Our Daily Baguette

I stared at the letter I was writing on my computer screen and bit into a chocolate croissant.

The flaky, buttery pastry melted in my mouth. C’était delicieux! How could I put into words what these croissants—and the French bakery they came from—meant to our tiny New England town? And what good would my letter do anyway?

I’d heard it that morning. The bakery was closing. Fini. I set the croissant on a plate and looked out the window. The sky was dark and gloomy, winter still not relinquishing its grip.
