Dad's Pitch

When I was pitching in the major leagues I was known as "Knucksie," because I threw a knuckleball. You don't actually throw a knuckleball with your knuckles.

But that's just one of the many strange things about the pitch. Few pitchers can consistently control it, and fewer still can make a living throwing it.

Yet that's exactly what my brother Joe and I both did. We credit our dad. He's the one who taught me the knuckler—and just about every important thing I know.

When I heard the news that I was being laid off, I felt like I’d been punched in the gut. My face grew hot, my stomach tightened, and I felt a little unsteady on my feet.

So far, unemployment felt awful.

Over the next few days, the knot in my stomach slowly unwound itself. I woke up in the morning and remembered, “I don’t have to rush to any meetings. I don’t have to commute. I don’t have to drink office coffee!”

Like so many 19-year-olds, Derrius Quarles is expecting great things from his first year at college.

But unlike most freshmen, the young man has overcome incredible obstacles to get there.

Quarles told CBS 2 Chicago that when he was 4 years old, his father was killed in a knife fight. A year later, he was removed from his mother's custody because she had drug problems.
