Gary Hirshberg is pretty busy these days. Aside from giving commencement speeches; promoting Food, Inc., the documentary he’s in; writing a book; and consulting with big companies on their sustainability practices, he runs a $300 million business called Stonyfield Farms.

But he began with just a couple of cows and a lot of determination.

In 1960, the year the Olympic Games were held in Rome, two young Californians, Thornton Hamlin and Charles Kober, were determined that they would be a part of the U.S. team to go there. In July, they took their sailboat, part of the Dragon class, to an all-important series of events on Louisiana's Lake Pontchartrain. The first week, they swept to the North American championship. If they could do as well in the qualifying finals the second week, they'd be selected to go to Rome.
