In my earliest memories I'm in my grandmother's yard in Steubenville, Ohio, reaching out to touch the soft petals of flowering phlox in lavender, rose and snowy white. She holds my hand as we walk along what we called "hollyhock alley" and sing a favorite hymn: "I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses…."

One couple decided to combine being environmentally friendly as well as provide money for their upcoming nuptials by starting a website asking citizens to donate their bottles and cans, according to Spokesman.com.

GUIDEPOSTS: You went green long before most people were aware of the environmental crisis. How did that come about?

Ed Begley Jr.: There was one good influence and one bad that led me to do all this stuff in 1970. The good thing was being a Boy Scout. I'd camp out and have some exposure to the natural world. The bad thing was growing up in Los Angeles. There was horrible, choking smog in the fifties and sixties. It was just very hard to breathe back then.

Did you hear? I got a new job this year, one I’m thrilled to pieces about.

It’s the 75th anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and they’ve made me their ambassador.

Don’t look so surprised! I know I don’t seem like much of a nature girl and, okay, I probably won’t be going hiking in my heels anytime soon. But the Smokies…they touch my soul. Let me tell you why.

All that I am comes from those mountains where I was born and raised.

Lynn Colwell has always been a saver and re-user, someone who repurposes empty containers and turns out the lights when leaving a room. When her kids were small, she would explain that doing these things helped the family save money. But these days, with her grandkids, she also talks about being good to the earth.

"They used to call me cheap," she says, with a laugh. "But now they call me green."
