No Limits

The snowy trail beneath my skis was stunning.

An undulating, 20-kilometer course through the Swedish countryside—meadows, valleys and forests. The kind of trail you’d love to ski for fun.

But that March day in 2002, a leisurely trek was the last thing on my mind. I’m an Olympic cross-country skier, and I was racing for all I was worth.

It Takes a Family

I don’t have time for diabetes!

That was my first reaction when the doctor gave me my diagnosis. I was in my endocrinologist’s office at the Mayo Clinic—we live 20 minutes away so that’s our local hospital.

She went over the results of my blood tests. They confirmed what she’d suspected: I had type 2 diabetes.

Nick Jonas may be one part of one of the most popular groups in pop music today, but he says his life hit a bump when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

The 16-year-old member of The Jonas Brothers told the National Press Club about his real-life story of learning he had juvenile diabetes.

Nick said that at first, the diagnosis came as a blow. He wondered if he was going to die young and how he would cope with caring for diabetes on a daily basis.

I awoke with a start at 3 a.m. one Sunday morning, hearing loud thuds. Flicking on the light I saw my 29-year-old husband, Joe, walking around dazed in our bedroom, bumping into furniture. He was having a reaction to low blood sugar and didn't know where he was.

Speaking Out

Most girls put on a few pounds when they go away to college. I dropped 20. It was my first semester at the University of South Florida, and I felt tired and sluggish. Some days I couldn't even get out of bed. Finally I went to campus health services. Their diagnosis: anemia. Anemia? In my senior year of high school I'd made scholarship money being in pageants, so I knew how to eat right and take care of myself.

Empowered

I woke, my head spinning. A wave of nausea hit me. I crawled to the bathroom and threw up, then broke out into a cold sweat. I'd been feeling run down for a couple of days, but this was way worse than the flu. I staggered to my parents' room. Never in my life had I felt this weak. And thirsty. What was wrong with me?

"This is serious," my doctor said, putting his hands on my shoulders and looking at me gravely. "The tests confirm what I'd suspected. You have diabetes. You are also overweight and out of shape. Pat, you've got to get control of your life—now!"
