Curried Hummus and Vegetable Pinwheels

These wraps are a quick, healthy pick-me-up. When people ask me “Why curried hummus?” I always answer “Why not!”

Curry is one of my favorite spices to use, and doubly so if I’m working with folks dealing with cancer. Turmeric and its subcomponent, curcumin, are common curry ingredients that have tumor-inhibiting and appetite-stimulating properties.

You Changed My Life, Rod

Maybe it was because I was an only child raised by a single working mom.

Every day after school, I came home to an empty apartment. Or because I didn't fit in with the other kids where I grew up in Los Angeles. I was chubby, terrible at sports, unappealing to girls. A bout with cancer that made me the only fourth-grader with no hair didn't help.

Maybe it was because I was a late bloomer career-wise. I spent a few years playing in rock bands before I went to college at the University of Michigan in my twenties and discovered my true passion was writing.

Navy Bean and Sun-Dried Tomato Dip

The creaminess of navy beans makes a great base for spreads and dips, which I've supercharged by adding sun-dried tomatoes.

Use it as a sandwich spread, or a dollop on veggies.

Ingredients

2 cups cooked navy beans or 1 15-ounce can, drained, rinsed and mixed with a spritz of fresh lemon juice and a pinch of sea salt

How a Bake Sale Can Help Fight Cancer

Can a bake sale really change lives?

Cookies for Kids' Cancer is hoping to do just that for the thousands of children who are diagnosed with pediatric cancer each year.

Gretchan Witt started the movement in December 2007 after her 2-year-old son Liam was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. She says she was shocked to learn how little research money is dedicated to research for childhood cancers, so she decided to do something about it.

One of my favorite gatherings is the Food as Medicine conference, which brings together hundreds of nutritionally minded physicians, nurses, and other wellness professionals.

I cook for the attendees, and while they often kindly tell me how much they learn from me, it definitely goes both ways.

Flurry of Christmas Cards Sent to 5-Year-Old Cancer Patient

Noah Biorkman's family is afraid that the 5-year old, who is living with cancer, may not survive to see Christmas.

So they are asking for other people's help to make the child's holiday season special by sending cards and gifts to him while he's in hospice care in Michigan.

Noah was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was 3 years old. He briefly went into remission, but the cancer came back in September 2008, WDIV-TV reports.

Coming Together to Shine a Light on Lung Cancer

The Shine a Light on Lung Cancer event was the brainchild of a survivor who wants to draw attention to what she believes is an overlooked illness.

Diane Legg of Amesbury, Massachusetts, started the local gathering after she was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005. It has since grown into an annual vigil sponsored by the Lung Cancer Alliance.

Finding A Cure For Cancer One Lemonade At A Time

It all started with a lemonade stand and the dream of a young patient living with cancer.

In 2000, 4-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Scott decided to set the goal of raising money for cancer research through her lemonade stand. At the time, her purpose was to help her doctors find "a cure for all kids with cancer."

Anne Best remembers the discomfort of night sweats all too well. Diagnosed with breast cancer at age 43, chemotherapy-induced hot flashes kept her awake most nights.

But now Anne is using her experience to help improve the quality of life of others who are living with cancer.

Now cancer-free, she is the owner of DryDreams Sleepwear, which sells pajamas, nightgowns and pillowcases made out of moisture-wicking fabric.
