The Santa Story

It's amazing to think I've been doing my Santa work for more than a decade now. No, I don't make toys way up at the North Pole. I'm a different kind of helper: his ghostwriter.

Our "partnership" began many Decembers ago. I'd been asked by the editor of the newspaper where I worked to write an article about Christmas traditions and Christmas history.

Worth the Weight

I took a deep breath and pushed the dumbbells up from my chest. My arms shook uncontrollably and I felt like I’d break in two.

I signed up for this, I reminded myself, when I became a contestant on The Biggest Loser—four months away from my family, suffering through the most intense workouts and dieting I’d ever done, competing with 17 others to lose the most weight.

Dealing with…and Defeating Emotional Eating

Question: I’m an emotional eater and stray at times. I then beat myself up...get back on track...and all the while worrying about my health. I had a heart attack in 2005 and made a lot of changes since then. Lately, however, I’m not as strict with my diet as I was right after the attack.

How can I get back to eating healthy?

Rolanda P.

Cookbook Chronicles: Guy Fieri

What inspired you to start cooking?
Very simple. The deal in my family was whoever cooked made the decision of what would be made. My parents were into macrobiotics, and I was a carnivore as a child. So [by cooking] I could make people happy, I could decide what we’d eat, and I didn’t have to do the dishes. If that doesn’t channel you as a child I don’t know what does!

What three ingredients are always in your kitchen?
Fresh cracked pepper, garlic and I can’t decide between soy sauce or olive oil.

My Waiting Game

Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, I always thought of baseball as a way of life. I couldn't get enough of it. But along with the hitting and fielding I developed a growing irritation for anything that didn't work out for me. I got bugged by things that took time.

Without my seeing it, this impatience began to carry over into various parts of my life. I remember once standing in line in the high school batting cage. I was anxious to take some extra cuts and annoyed that others were taking too many. I rudely pushed my way ahead of a couple of players.

Our Bond

Diane: I'll never forget that night. I was 22 years old. It was a Monday night football game in 1971, a matchup between my team, the Green Bay Packers, and the Detroit Lions.

A typical November night in Wisconsin—cold, wet and miserable. Still, it was a full house at Milwaukee County Stadium. I hunched in the stands wearing a Hefty bag to keep out the rain.

Healing Steps

A friend of mine called me long-distance recently. Her voice was calm but intense. "I have breast cancer," she told me.

By the time I hung up I felt frightened and concerned, not just for my friend, but also for myself.

More than 200,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. It's the leading cancer diagnosed in women today.

When cancer strikes—and it does—how does a person cope? And how about her friends, who want to give support?

Mary Travers (1936-2009)

She sang of peace and unity and inspired a generation.

A powerful voice for peace was silenced September 16th when singer Mary Travers died from complications of leukemia at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. She was 72. Known to millions simply as Mary, she was the iconic blond member of the enduring folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, who took America by storm when their first album was released in 1962.
