Can Unemployment Be the Healthiest Time of Your Life?

When I heard the news that I was being laid off, I felt like I’d been punched in the gut. My face grew hot, my stomach tightened, and I felt a little unsteady on my feet.

So far, unemployment felt awful.

Over the next few days, the knot in my stomach slowly unwound itself. I woke up in the morning and remembered, “I don’t have to rush to any meetings. I don’t have to commute. I don’t have to drink office coffee!”

The Facts: Weight

Someone you love trying to lose weight? Want to help? Here's how.

Encourage.
Don't criticize. Anger, loneliness, rejection. They can all be excuses to ditch a diet. Be gentle.

Pitch In.
Bring a salad or a tasty low-fat dessert to get-togethers so there's at least one healthy option on the table.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind.
Put away candy, cookies and other tempting foods. Better yet, keep them out of the house.

Have a Laugh to Help Your Heart

Healthy eating may not be the only way to improve your cholesterol levels—try setting aside some time for a good laugh, scientists suggest.

Researchers from Loma Linda University in California found that adults with type II diabetes who let themselves laugh at "self-selected" humor for a half-hour each day boosted their health as a result.

The laughter group saw their levels of good cholesterol rise by 26 percent, while their levels of harmful C-reactive proteins dropped by 66 percent.

Control Your Risk

Think you can't catch diabetes? Well, technically you can't. But did you know that 90-95 percent of the diabetes diagnosed in this country is type 2, the adult-onset form and triggered by certain lifestyle habits? Here are 3 simple ways you can reduce your chances of "catching" diabetes:

1. Keep your fat intake to 25 percent of your calories.
Extra body fat makes cells less responsive to insulin and slows production of the hormone needed to maintain blood sugar levels.

Why I Joined: For years I prayed daily, “Lord, help me not to overeat today.”

Food dominated my life. when I wasn’t eating, I was thinking about food. I used it as a comfort as well as a reward. It is safe to say that when ever I was hurting, upset, lonely, bored, or just because, I ate.

My Goal: To continue my journey of healthy change.

For a Healthy Heart, Forgive

We all suffer wrongs, big and small, on a daily basis. Another shopper cuts in front of you in the grocery store line. A coworker takes credit for your idea. A friend talks about you behind your back. A parent wasn't there for you. A spouse has an online flirtation.

Reduce Your Risk

One in eight women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer at some point in her life. The good news: 88% of women survive at least 10 years after diagnosis. Better yet, you can make lifestyle changes that reduce your risk of breast cancer and improve your overall health.

Stay at a healthy weight.
Fat tissue produces estrogen. More body fat results in higher levels of estrogen, which increases the likelihood of developing breast cancer.

Exercise.
