Pomegranate-Cranberry Sauce

Some scholars believe the pomegranate was the fruit of the tree of life. Jewish tradition holds that its seeds match the number of mitzvot, or good deeds, in the Torah.

Recent studies link pomegranate juice to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol and blood pressure. Wish your loved ones healthy holidays with this dish, rich in meaning and antioxidants.

Roasted Turkey Breast with Cornbread-Sage Stuffing and Brandy Gravy

The Thanksgiving turkey conundrum: How to keep the breast meat from drying out while the dark meat finishes cooking? By roasting a bone-in turkey breast by itself, we've eliminated the stress and cut the cooking time by several hours.

What you get is perfectly moist, tender white meat with crisp, salty skin—all in under an hour. If you don't have time to make the gravy, skip it. This succulent bird doesn't need it.

This recipe came to me from my sweet cousin Stephanie, whom everybody calls "the peacemaker" between us girl cousins, because whenever one of us is puffed up about something, Stephanie is the first one to go out of her way to bring the obstinate one back into the fold.

Curried Hummus and Vegetable Pinwheels

These wraps are a quick, healthy pick-me-up. When people ask me “Why curried hummus?” I always answer “Why not!”

Curry is one of my favorite spices to use, and doubly so if I’m working with folks dealing with cancer. Turmeric and its subcomponent, curcumin, are common curry ingredients that have tumor-inhibiting and appetite-stimulating properties.

Greetings from…Turkeyville

Turkeyville was in the middle of farmland just north of Marshall, Michigan, surrounded by acres of cornfields and grass.

I pulled into the parking lot, keeping an eye out for turkeys that might be patrolling. I surveyed the wooden building with red shutters and doors.

There was a huge sign out front featuring a running turkey. “Cornwell’s Turkeyville,” it read. “Home of the world’s best turkey sandwich.” Sounded promising.

Angel Biscuits

It all started because I was new in town.

My husband, Al, and I moved to Blanco in the rolling Texas hill country between Austin and San Antonio, after he found work with the phone company.

We went to church, I volunteered and our son, Aaron, played soccer. But still, especially around the holidays, I felt a little lonely, wondering whether we had made the right decision, moving to a tiny town of 1,500 people so far away from where we had married in Wisconsin.

Say It with...Tamales?

Bill and I love food almost as much as we love each other.

Early in our marriage we made a pact to plan our vacations around great eating opportunities.

In our 21 years together, we’ve written cookbooks on the best way to grill chicken and what we consider to be the real American breakfast. We’ve eaten fresh whiting in Australia, fermented pork in Thailand and grilled shrimp with Kashmiri chiles in India.

The Best Christmas Cookies Ever: Honorable Mention

My wife is usually in charge of the Christmas baking, but these cookies are my holiday specialty.

My aunt, Tante Bea, started making these Church Windows when she was a Sister of the Holy Cross, and passed the recipe on to me.

They’ve become a family holiday staple—my kids say it’s just not Christmas without them!

Don's Church Windows
