Nick Jonas may be one part of one of the most popular groups in pop music today, but he says his life hit a bump when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

The 16-year-old member of The Jonas Brothers told the National Press Club about his real-life story of learning he had juvenile diabetes.

Nick said that at first, the diagnosis came as a blow. He wondered if he was going to die young and how he would cope with caring for diabetes on a daily basis.

Always Connected

In my tight-knit Greek-American family we did everything together. I mean, everything. Played basketball, watched wrestling and Boston Bruins hockey on TV, ate meals together, went to church and the grocery store and stuck so close that I knew I was loved by my parents more than anything else.

If anything ever went wrong, I would be okay because they looked out for me and I looked out for them. And you know what? It's still the same.

Reunion!

Susan Kearns Benner: I spent the first week in September of l994 at my place on Kent Island, Maryland. I traveled a lot for my work as a seminar leader, and I enjoyed unwinding at home. Staring out my kitchen window where a small finger of the Chesapeake Bay lapped at my backyard, I thought about an idea that had kept coming to mind all summer: For some inexplicable reason I felt it was time for a high school reunion.
