The best and the worst years of my life started with a telephone call. From that moment on, a whole series of strange things went into motion; I haven't been the same person since.

The call came just after baseball season ended in the fall of 1977. Andre Thornton was on the line. "How about getting together sometime?" he said. I was surprised to hear from him.

A Song I Had to Give Away

As a songwriter I'm naturally pleased when people recognize my authorship. When Goldie Hawn recorded my tune "The House Song" in the mid-1970s, it was as big a thrill to me as when "I Dig Rock and Roll Music," which I had a hand in writing, went Top 10 in the 1960s. But to this day the song I get the most credit for is one I didn't really write.

Music has been part of my life since I was eight years old. In high school I was encouraged to start my own rhythm-and-blues group, but when I moved to New York City in 1959, I had no entertainment career plans.

Thanks for Our Pets

I’m thankful for the way my dog Kelly greets me at the door, as if my return is the best thing that happened to her all day.

I’m thankful for her soft reddish fur, and I’m especially thankful that she loves me every day.

Although we express our gratitude for our pets by feeding them, loving them and playing with them, Thanksgiving is the perfect time to remind ourselves just how lucky we are.

The Four Chaplains

On a frigid February night in 1943, the U.S. troop ship Dorchester surged through rough North Atlantic seas about 150 miles off the coast of Greenland. Down in the old converted cruise ship's stifling hold, four U.S. Army chaplains circulated among the frightened young men, some lying wide-eyed in their bunks, others nervously playing cards or shooting dice. Chatting with the troops, the chaplains eased tensions, calmed fears and passed out soda crackers to alleviate seasickness.
