Laser Battle: Your Way to a Job or Shine?
The whole process of job searching, writing a resume and interviewing creates a mild discomfort in me. It's hard for me to do what feels like bragging about myself…even harder to embrace the concept that I'm supposed to expound on why I'm better than someone else so I can win and they can lose.
Going online and reading the latest advice on job searching in an economic depression only makes me feel worse—everything emphasizes the need to compete even more fiercely for scarce resources. As if all other candidates are my enemies, and it's an employment war we're in.
Okay, enough of that! I decide. Time to take a spiritual approach to my job searching.
First of all, I refuse to buy into messages of lack in what I know is a friendly, loving and abundant universe. Yes, the country and the world has changed economically, but I don't believe the underlying purpose is to make us suffer and battle each other. There is still a right, divine place for all of us, and we are all valuable and needed.
When I lived in Seattle I attended the Center for Spiritual Living, and I've never forgotten the words of Reverend Kathianne Lewis: "Whatever you are seeking in the universe, is seeking you. Whatever you most long for, longs to belong to you."
Hearing that fed my soul—it was such a soothing relief—so reassuring, loving and fulfilling to know that the universe wanted to grant my deepest desires.
I know my next job is out there, longing to be filled by me, just as I am longing to fulfill its needs.
I can choose to put my emphasis on service, rather than competition. I can authentically present my skills and gifts for the purpose of filling not only my highest good, but the higher good of others. I don't have to tell any stories of why I'm better than anyone else—just be honest about what I love to do, and how that could help a company.
When I view my search in this way, it becomes a quest of right fulfillment, and creates a deep knowing and peace inside.
We're all part of the divine light, and we've all been given unique ways to express it. The world may tell us to use our powerful light like a Star Wars saber—to slash, battle and destroy the competition. But I like to think that all we have to do is shine.
