Keeping Under Control at Special Events
This weekend my husband, Mike, and I traveled to Nashville, TN. We were there to attend the wedding of my fellow Biggest Loser finalist, Isabeau Miller and Jonathan Peterson.
It was exciting to be reacquainted with other Biggest Loser cast members, Jim, Hollie and Nicole. As I’ve said before, reunions of this type are really a wonderful opportunity for accountability. Having all gone through the unique “Biggest Loser experience”, we understand the trials, temptations and challenges of real life after losing a significant amount of weight.
The trip provided me with opportunities for being creative in practicing what I preach. For example, I did not attend the rehearsal dinner hungry. I drank a glass of water and had a light snack prior to arrival. This enabled me to truly appreciate the importance of the event—the fellowship and the friendship—rather than my focus being on the offerings of the buffet.
Our accommodations were beautiful; however they lacked a workout facility. It’s OK to give yourself a few days off from your workout routine while vacationing. However, we remained active by walking extensively through the colorful streets of downtown Nashville. (A couple of hours of brisk walking—even just for fun—can burn as much as 480 calories.)
The wedding was beautiful and the bride was gorgeous! The family spared no expense at treating wedding guests to a lavish, delicious meal. However, the moment I walked into the ballroom, I immediately spotted the chocolate wedding cake, which I promise seemed to be calling my name.
Since a good rule of thumb is, “all things in moderation,” I knew I could indulge as long as I factored it into my calorie intake for the day. Remember, this is real life we’re talking about. You are not in prison, so it’s OK to enjoy your favorite treats within reason.
The reception was filled with music, laughter and dancing. A scene I wouldn’t have even allowed myself to feel comfortable in just a few years ago. I was overjoyed to be able to share this wonderful event with my Biggest Loser friends, who are like family.
This occasion was a great time for me to look back and remember all the invaluable lesson I learned during my time at the Biggest Loser campus; tools I will continue to use for the rest of my life.
