My husband and I attended a wonderful “Marriage Enrichment Conference” in Georgia this past weekend led by Dr. Richard Marks who has a ministry called Marriage for Life.

But even though the focus of the conference was intended to be primarily on marriage relationships, I marveled at how many “life lessons” in general I came away with.

One thing that Dr. Marks continually said throughout the weekend was, “Pain always pursues pleasure.” Now he was talking in large part about emotional pain that seeks a diversion from its circumstances in order to get emotional relief. But he said one statement in particular that I found myself hurriedly scribbling on my notepad because I didn't want to forget it. He said, “Your brain will do whatever it has to to get from pain to pleasure...even if it's eating too much to find your escape.”

It was fascinating to listen to how he blended the clinical with the emotional with the spiritual. He explained how high concentrations of endorphins in the brain produce a sense of euphoria, enhance pleasure, and suppress pain, both emotionally and physically.

Although he just touched on it, it certainly made an impression on me as I am continually interested in what causes us to “tick” when it comes to our eating habits, good nutrition, and exercise.

So after the conference, I began to read as much as I could about this whole “pain pursuing pleasure” concept as it relates to health, wellness and personal change.

What I now understand, is that when endorphins are low, people feel anxious; they are also more aware of pain. This can actually cause an appetite for fat and fatty foods, such as fries, cheese, creamy sauces, margarine, butter, fried chicken, potato chips, and chocolate, to name a few. (Is your mouth watering as you read those?) When people eat some fat, they will notice a change in mood, actually feeling more pleasure. This feeling is related to a higher concentration of endorphins. So overeating makes sense if there is a legitimate, physical reaction that comes from it.

But you know what else I learned through my "research"?

I learned that exercise, by releasing fat from within the body, raises endorphins and causes the same mood changes. Yes, I said the same mood changes. Isn't that ironic? Fatty foods and exercise can actually create the same feeling of wellness and pleasure within someone. But the result of each couldn't be more contradictory.

In actuality, when we have cravings for potato chips and chocolate, it may mean that we need more endorphins rather than all the empty calories from chips. We don't have a magic endorphins pill we can pop, but we have something even better: knowledge of how to deal with these specific types of cravings.

Here's some of the “knowledge” I recently came across that I want to share with you:

In addition to endorphins, there are other hormones that affect our moods and our physical reaction to pain and stress. Two of these hormones are serotonin and dopamine.

Low serotonin levels actually make us crave sugar. A high level of serotonin gives us a feeling of calm, poise, confidence and relaxation whereas low levels make us nervous, irritable and stressed. To combat this—if you suspect this may be affecting you—try some low-cal, practical options like crackers, frozen yogurt or popcorn.

Low dopamine levels make us feel “foggy.” So in other words, when we don't get enough protein our dopamine levels drop and we feel mentally sluggish. The best way to raise these levels is to eat plenty of lean protein and keep your fat intake and your carbohydrates moderate.

You actually need a good amount of carbs in your body before you exercise. Many people mistakenly believe that if they limit their carbohydrate intake, and then exercise, their body fat will be broken down. What happens, in fact, is that they are lowering their capacity to burn fat, and will lower their metabolism. The reason for this is that the body will break down muscle to form carbohydrate. In addition, the muscle breakdown raises stress hormone levels and causes carbohydrate cravings.

Interesting stuff, isn't it?

I guess what I took away most from my experience this past weekend (other than the wonderful marital enrichment advice which has little to do with this blog) was the practical information on how our bodies react to hormonal influences and how it really is possible to regulate these things with some intentional decisions. It can be as simple as when we experience strong cravings for sugar and high fat foods, to acknowledge that it's probably due to a low hormone level that can be resolved with a sensible food choice.

I think we all know that when it comes to diet, the research is clear, the best diet is a balanced diet—in moderation.

And then we all need to remember to get some high-quality carbs before workouts. This will help fuel the intensity of the workout, and increase, not lower your metabolism.

I know we all deal with pain on different levels. The world we live in is stressful sometimes. But hopefully some of this practical information will make an impression on you just as it did on me. And then you too can learn how to let your pain pursue pleasure in a way that is healthy, beneficial and even low-cal.

A few days ago I was standing in the parking lot talking with the ladies that had just undergone an especially brutal boot camp class with me at the hands of our trainer, Margie.

We were of different ages, shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. But as I began tuning in from one conversation to another what I became alarmingly aware of was that the one thing everyone seemed to have in common was stress.

What we realized through our discussion was that as women our weight is a major concern for most of us—whether it is losing, gaining or maintaining. How ironic that dieting to combat the stress of weight issues actually increases the stress. In other words, our reaction to stress often ends up adding even more pounds—exactly the opposite of what we're working hard to achieve.

Margie, who is a wealth of knowledge on “all things healthy” decided to enlighten us even further. She reminded us that our bodies produce a hormone called cortisol. She said that there's a consensus among some healthcare professionals (and a personally held belief of her own) that there is a link between high levels of cortisol and excess abdominal fat.

The theory is that dieting—which produces stress for many woman—actually increases cortisol levels. And the negative effect isn't all cosmetic. Serious health risks come from excess fat in the abdomen, like an increased chance of developing diabetes or heart disease.

Whether the link between high cortisol levels and fat is scientific remains to be conclusively proven. But when I started reading up on it, I learned that too much cortisol in the blood is also involved when it comes to other health problems like poor bone health.

Even if we put stress hormones aside, it does seem logical that stress makes it harder for women to put their good intentions into action. It puts us on edge, sometimes making a simple challenge something that causes us to revert back to old, unhealthy habits.

As we stood around after class the other day, we decided that we must take deliberate action to reduce the stress factors in our lives. Here are some things we came up with:

Give your body the food it needs and craves.
Don't be consumed with counting calories as much as with feeding yourself a balanced diet of good grains, vegetables, protein and fruits. Always eat breakfast and continue to nourish your body with little meals or snacks throughout the day. But make it the right kinds of food.

Learn to love exercise.
It's not easy at first, but you have to move your body on a regular basis to ensure optimal good health. Not all exercise is fun. But there are enough exercise regimes out there that you should be able to find something you enjoy. Make regular physical activity something you look forward to. And be creative. Maybe you can try dancing or playing with your kids or grandkids. Just move and learn to love it!

Maintain a positive self image.
We must think positively about ourselves and our bodies. We all agreed this is essential to reach our personal health goals. You must accept yourself now, just as your are (just as God sees you and accepts you). Negative self-talk—we all agreed—has incredible power over us. And it can completely knock us off track.

We must view ourselves in a positive, worthy way in order to stay on target with our fitness efforts. We also agreed that “accepting ourselves and our bodies” doesn't mean that there isn't room for improvement but it helps us treat ourselves better on our way to our personal health goals.

Find a little “me time” everyday.
Whether it's just 10 minutes to relax and reflect on life or whether it's an enjoyable activity that will really invigorate and energize you, it's really important that you make the time to do it. You could even make a list of activities you enjoy the most and try to find a little time for at least one of them each day. You will be surprised at how much it can make a difference in reducing your stress.

Stress may be an unavoidable component of life nowadays. But if we are deliberate about the good choices we make each day we don't have to give in to the horrible effects of it.

There's really nothing easy in life. Whether it be losing 100 pounds or changing careers or choosing a new school for a child.

My family has been undergoing a lot of transitions recently. We're faced with many important decisions. And we've really been seeking God for answers. And still, we wait. Do you ever find yourself in that position?

I've heard a lot of sayings over the years that should serve as some comfort. Things like, “waiting times are not wasted times” and “delayed blessings are not necessarily denied blessings.”

I guess it's then when you really have to dig in deep to find your faith. Live your faith. And you have to trust that the God who created you is big enough, strong enough and capable enough to guide you in the right direction. Actually, it's never God I doubt; it's myself. It's wonderful when He makes things so obviously clear that there's no denying it's His will.

When I was cast on The Biggest Loser up against 250,000 other applicants, it was obviously God's will for my life. When I was able to work hard and lose the weight that had held me back for so much of my life—God's will. When we were able to jump through so many hoops and cut effortlessly through red tape to execute the adoption of our precious little boy quickly and smoothly, it was obviously God's hand at work.

So what about when things don't fall so precisely into place? What then?

What if you have a weight-loss goal and the scale isn't budging? You know it's in God's will to lose weight and get healthy and be a good steward of the body He gave you.

What if you have a goal to break a bad habit or make a positive personal change? But you can't seem to conquer it and instead you are filled with anxiety and defeat.

It's then that what we are truly made of comes through. I find scripture to be very enlightening and helpful during these times. God's word is more than just a little pat on the back and the utterance of a cliché from a well-meaning friend. If we can wrap our minds around the power and truth of scripture I think we can all draw great strength during these waiting, anxious times.

Here are two in particular that are blessing me at this crazy time in life. I share them with you in the hope that whatever struggle you may be facing will be made better by resting on these same promises from God.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)

As you read this, my wish is that you'll be encouraged if you, too, happen to be going through some “waiting times.” Be sure that God has a wonderful plan for your life! Stay strong in your faith and it will come to pass.

For obvious reasons I was compelled recently to watch a special on The Learning Channel (TLC) entitled, Confessions of a Reality Show Loser. It was a show that chronicled the journey of Season 3 Biggest Loser champ, Erik Chopin who lost an astounding 50% of his original weight to earn the top honors on the season right before mine.

Up until recently Erik held the all-time largest percentage lost. I remember sitting at home watching his finale with my husband. Our jaws literally dropped to the ground at his final reveal. His transformation was completely amazing!

Since then, (about three years later) he has gained about 75% of the weight back. His frustration with the process and with the lessons he learned (or didn't learn) fueled the hour-long special. I know Erik and his wife Michelle personally. So I watched with great interest. I think some of the things I learned from watching are worth sharing with you here.

For example, Erik shared that after losing this astonishing amount of weight, he noticed almost immediately that he might have problems keeping it off. He began a pattern of eating poorly and skipping the gym. Then he would follow those days with extremely low calorie intake and painfully hard workout sessions.

That set in motion the mentality that “exercise is the punishment for bad nutrition.” That's a defeating mindset.

Erik also shared that after months and months of depriving himself of the foods he loved, he just wanted to get his hands on some of those things. A common response to long-term deprivation is eventual overindulgence.

We simply can not have an all-or-nothing mindset. It won't work. Food is to be enjoyed. But it's got to be the right kind of food.

I guess what I appreciated the most throughout the whole show, and what I want to share as encouragement to my blog readers is that it doesn't matter how big your successes are, you have to continue to work hard to maintain success.

It was a wake up call to me.

We get discouraged by the failures in our past, but ironically our accomplishments can also defeat us. The commitment to good health is a never-ending battle. Like in my life, just because you've done the hard work one time doesn't mean it's over.

Jillian Michaels has told me many times, “The only way to truly fail is to stop trying.” I am committed to never stop working and never stop trying to live these lessons.

In the end, Erik is trying to regain his healthy lifestyle. Although he's received a lot of criticism for his excessive weight gain, don't we all agree that everyone is deserving of a second chance? That's God's nature. And I am most thankful for second chances in my own life.

So don't be hampered by the successes or failures you've experienced. Let every day be a new start to living the life you deserve!

I don't mean to sound like a broken record. But it seems like I am compelled to reiterate that the most important lesson I have learned on this journey life has taken me on is that of the innate worthiness that lies within each of us. It's bestowed upon us by our creator. We all have value and worth not because of anything we have done or not done. But because God says so.

This was confirmed once again to me recently through an e-mail message I received from a dear friend of mine, Ashley. Her beginning words caught my attention, “The worthiness message marches on!”

Ash shared with me a message a dear friend had sent out to a distribution list of people encouraging them along the lines of worthiness as she was reading my book, Fat Chance. How humbling to think that people are reading those words and really taking them to heart. But after all, that's the reason I felt led to write the book. So I am glad it's making an impact of some sort.

Even so, it was a wonderful reminder to re-read and re-absorb the wonderful truth of our worthiness in God's eyes. So I wanted to share some of those sentiments with you today.

She very precisely determined the main point of the book is that the reason THE MAJORITY of people out there don't reach their true potential is because not only are they not focusing on it, they don't BELIEVE THEY ARE WORTH IT. And, because we don't believe we are worth it, or our dreams are worth it, or our potential is worth it, it's just easier to sit back and keep focusing on our imperfections, the things that "will never change" and so we settle. Settle for second best, settle for good enough, settle for the leftovers.

I finally came to the conclusion that I am worthy of living the life of my dreams. The moment someone finally says those words out loud and therefore agrees in their spirit that he or she is in fact worthy, things change. Everything changes! It was true for me. It will be true for you too. You are precious to God. You are purposed for good. And you are worthy of the life of your dreams.

My husband just celebrated his birthday a few days ago. He received so many sweet messages and nice cards, but one in particular stood out to me. It wasn't the card itself (although it was nice, too), but the handwritten sentiments inside. They came from a family member and were simple enough, but filled with wisdom.

She wrote, “I usually get very reflective during the days surrounding my birthday. I think about where I am and where I'm going. This year I packed some things to take with me; likewise I chose some things to leave behind. I hope the journey this coming year takes you on leads to adventure, healing, and a refreshing that only the Lord can bring.”

The concept of packing some things to take with us into the future and intentionally leaving some things behind really struck me as brilliant. I like the visual of that statement.

I've said before that not everyone struggles with a physical weight. But everyone does carry a weight of some type with them. It may be financial, or relational, or it may even be a weight you didn't even place upon yourself—but you may have carried it for years—from one birthday to another. The good thing is that we don't have to carry those things that don't enhance our lives and uplift us! That realization is so liberating.

Of course, I don't know when your birthday is—but I encourage you not to wait until then to take this introspective look at your life. There are things that we can all pack up and take with us into the next phase and there are things we—for our own benefit—must leave behind.

I feel so fortunate to be able to write this weekly blog for GUIDEPOSTS. The topics I write about are considered "Health & Wellness" and "Personal Change." In my opinion, and in my experience, the two are completely intermingled. Our bodies and good health are totally connected to giving us the power and the determination to make personal change in our lives.

So like the wishes that were extended to my husband, for each of you reading this I hope the journey this coming year takes you on leads to adventure, healing and a refreshing only the Lord can bring.

My pastor shared a story (of course this is my paraphrase as best as I can remember it) of a little boy who was typically rambunctious, energetic and some might even say aggressive. Well, the boy visited a candy store with his mother. During the course of their visit the store owner generously offered to give the boy a handful of the candy of his choice. A whole handful!

Shyly the boy held back. He looked at the candy jar and shuffled from one foot to another. He never made a move. Finally the store owner decided (quite literally) to take matters into his own hands. And with that, he dove his own hand deep into the candy jar, pulled out quite a stash of delicious candy and plopped it squarely into the waiting hands of the little boy.

After the man walked away, the boy's mother asked, “Son, why were you so reluctant to grab a handful of candy when he offered it to you? That's not like you at all.” To which the boy replied, “I'm no fool. Didn't you see mom? His hands were so much bigger than mine!”

The boy saw the big picture and he calculated the risk wisely. By letting the store owner determine the amount—by the size of his own handful—the boy gained so much more than he would have if he had made the grab himself.

His hands are so much bigger than mine. That's statement can be said of God too.

This past week I spent traveling from coast to coast promoting my new book Fat Chance: Losing the Weight, Gaining My Worth. It was an incredible experience to be able to meet some fascinating people, and share my story.

As part of the promotional tour, last Sunday I was invited to speak at The Crystal Cathedral. I had to keep reminding myself to keep my mouth closed as I took in the splendor of the place I had seen on television all my life. It's magnificent in TV. But in person, it's even more amazing.

As I met Dr. Robert Schuller and his daughter Sheila I thought of how blessed I have been to experience all of the things that God has brought into my life over the past two years. Things I never would have dreamed would ever happen to me. I mean, I'm just a stay-at-home mom from Jacksonville, Florida.

I really am humbled when I think about it. God opened the doors for me to be on a national television show and to finally lose the weight that had been holding me down all my life. I've been on Larry King and Oprah Winfrey. I was invited to the White House. I am considered by some people to be a motivational speaker and I get to travel all over the country and talk about the transformation that has taken place in my life and offer encouragement to others. And now I am a published author. It literally blows my mind when I think about all God has done for me.

His hands are so much bigger than mine.

I would have never dared to dream so big. But we are told that God wants to give us “exceedingly abundantly above all we could think to hope or ask.” (Ephesians 3:20) So I encourage you to dare to dream big. And ask God to bless you. You just never know what's in store for you when His hand dives down into that candy jar called life. You must just make sure that you—like that little boy—have your hands open and ready to catch it!

At this point we are three weeks into the new year. Have you fallen off the wagon of your resolutions yet? I read something this week that says that 90% of people break their New Year's resolutions by Valentine's Day. Sad, but true.

So if you are already struggling with pressing on to what you committed to do at the beginning of the year, I just want to encourage you to keep at it! If you are miserably hungry because you have reduced your calorie intake and you are aching because you have increased your physical activity, don't let the discomfort of where you are right now surpass the exhilarating feeling that will come when you succeed.

Think back on what you truly wanted at the beginning of this year. Hopefully it was more than just to look good in a swimsuit by the summer. I mean we can all gain motivation from a variety of sources. But if your goal was to change your life for the better and improve your health for all the right reasons (not the vain ones) then you are more likely to find the determination to stick with it.

Don't lose sight of the fact that you are worthy. Worthy of all the hard work, sweat and tears it may take to get you where you want to go. And don't beat yourself up if you slipped up a little and have already indulged in a double-stuffed Oreo cookie by mid-January. Just get over it. And get on with it!

A little progress is better than none at all.

I was talking with a friend the other day about this very thing. We were comparing the physical journey a lot of people embark on at the beginning of the year with our spiritual journeys. For example, some people promise to be more involved in reading and studying their Bible at the beginning of the New Year. Maybe they commit to reading a certain number of chapters a day. But time and commitments get in the way and mess up their progress in keeping on schedule.

So, should they put the Bible down and say, “I got off track, so I just won't read it at all anymore?”

No, that's silly. Because even a little bit of something good is still something. And it's still really important. Studying just a little of God's word can still yield major benefits. Just like exercising a little or improving your nutrition just a little can still provide positive results.

Studies show that reducing your weight by as little as 5-10 percent can decrease your chance of developing heart disease and improve your heart function and blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Just a few pounds—a little effort—can make a big difference.

So this year if you are already frustrated because you aren't where you wanted to be, don't be all or nothing. Even if you change a little it's still important and eventually little changes can actually become big ones.

I had another one of those "Aha" moments this week. And I really feel like God imparted some wisdom to me that I wanted to share. It's so simple and yet so profound. If we could all “get this” it would truly change our lives.

“What you value...you treat differently.”

Think about these two scenarios. In one, you go to a fine restaurant. Your surroundings are immaculate and beautifully decorated. The lighting is soft and perfect. Someone lays a fine linen napkin in your lap and places shiny sterling silverware in front of you. As much as being there for a meal, you truly have an experience.

Contrast that with the feeling you get when you receive your food wrapped in paper, thrown in a sack and handed to you through a window.

In the first scenario your expectations are higher and the experience is better. There's a level of respect and admiration that goes with something that is well taken care of and well executed.

The same can be said for our body.

When we realize what a gift from God our body is, how miraculous it is, and how truly valuable we are we will treat it differently because there's a level of respect and admiration that accompanies something that is well taken care of.

Starting off this new year, so many people are concerned with diet and exercise. Taking care of yourself is probably a commitment most people make when the new year rolls around. But it's kind of like when you get a new car.

With a new vehicle, you are so proud of it that it takes a high place on your list of priorities. In fact, you probably wash it every weekend. You condition the leather seats. You keep the interior vacuumed and immaculate. No one is allowed to eat in your new car. And you put the best, high-octane gasoline in it. It must be kept pristine. After all, it's your new car. It's important!

But then as time goes by you get busy. And the newness and the sense of priority for the car kind of dwindles. You still like it and it still gets you where you need to go. But the precision with which you used to care for it diminishes somewhat. Not only do you care a little less about the washing and waxing, but there may even be some crumbs in the seats from the kids snacking in the back.

I think it's normal to have those tendencies, but we've got to do better with our bodies than we do with our cars. We may have several automobiles throughout our lifetime, but we only get one body. And we must take impeccable care of it and, in fact, “use better fuel” to keep it going. Just like you can't let your car sit idly for months on end in the garage and not expect some corrosion; you can't neglect your body and expect it to perform at its optimal capacity either.

I've had so many people ask for my tips for diet and exercise and how to change their lives in the new year. My simple response is this: In 2010 don't let it simply be about calories in and calories out. Let it be about learning your true value. Because once we grasp that concept everything else will be in perspective and change—for the better—is inevitable.

Remember, what you value—you treat differently.

Happy New Year to you all!

I love the freshness of each new year, as the calendar flips over from December to January. It symbolizes a new start and endless possibilities for the future months. But it also is a time to stop and reflect on the blessings and lessons learned from the previous year.

Some of what I learned in 2009 was simply a reminder of things I already knew. And, still, other things were brand new revelations! And I wanted to share some of these things with you.

Anything worth having is worth working for—and working hard for. I have learned that maintaining a significant weight loss is probably harder than losing the weight to begin with. But it's not to say that the hard work isn't worth it. But it requires time, effort, dedication and making yourself a priority.

Accountability is key. You must surround yourself with others who have your best interest at heart. If you don't naturally have a circle of friends who will encourage you to strive to be your best, then find a support group of some kind.

Ask yourself, “What am I truly hungry for?” Are you eating because you have a real physical hunger for food or are you feeding other needs (like loneliness, boredom, sadness) in an effort to sooth yourself? Ask the tough questions and be honest with yourself when you answer.

Plan ahead. Preparing your food at the beginning of the week is a wonderful way to stay on track. If you grill chicken and veggies ahead of time you can put them in individual ziplock bags and put them in the fridge. When it's time to eat you don't have to exert any effort. You already have safe and healthy choices right at your fingertips.

I also learned (or re-learned) some valuable things that don't necessarily have to do with diet and nutrition but are still valuable lessons. For example:

It's not what you have in your life, but whom you have in your life that truly counts.

Life is never more precious than when viewing it through the eyes of your children.

We are always responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel. Consequences are ours to own.

Either you learn to control your attitude or it controls you.

There are always others watching and grace under pressure is a precious commodity to be cultivated.

Probably the most significant thing that I've learned to appreciate over 2009 is the fact that “every morning God's mercies are new.” (Lamentations 3:22-24)

This scripture comes from the biblical prophet Jeremiah that records his grief at a particular point of despair, but through it all he recalled God's mercies and therefore found hope.

This past year was filled with some exhilarating joys and some sorrows as well. That's called life. But if when you wake up tomorrow, thank God for His mercies and for giving you a fresh start each day. It's yours if you'll just accept it.

Hoping you and your families will experience a blessed, healthy and prosperous 2010!

It's amazing how quickly the months have flown by. And again, we are at the most festive time of year.

It's especially wonderful to watch through the eyes of my children. Our 9-year-old has really embraced some of our family traditions and has seemed so engaged in the spirit this year.

Our (almost) 2-year-old is simply mesmerized by all the lights (his term for them: “yites”). Every time we walk out the front door or return home in the evening his reaction is one of amazement and awe, like he's never seen them before. Oh, that we would all share the same childlike attitude of amazement over the meaning of this special time of year.

Of course with all the fun, comes challenges to stay on track with healthy choices and smart decisions.

There's no way around it, food is an important part of many holidays, celebrations, family and cultural traditions. And as I've said before, many special occasions often center around food (especially in the South where I come from). People struggle with their current weight and especially if they are trying to lose weight.

Maybe it’s all the tempting treats available during the holiday season or the pressure from family, friends, and co-workers to overeat. Maybe it’s the increased emotional eating (whether it be from holiday stress or holiday joy). Maybe it's the dangerous “New Year” mentality that tells us to indulge all we want now because a new year and a new start is just around the corner.

Regardless of the reasons, it is not necessary to completely avoid holiday food and fun in an attempt to maintain your weight. Just be smart about it.

Focus on weight maintenance—not weight loss—during the holidays.
If you are currently overweight and wanting to drop a significant amount, let's face it, now isn't the time to do it. Maintaining your current weight is a big enough challenge for this time of year.

Be physically active every day.
Busy holiday schedules can often get us off track from our fitness and exercise routines. But remember, physical activity of any type can actually help reduce stress, speed up your metabolism and burn extra calories you may have consumed from holiday eating.

Also, turn those last-minute Christmas shopping sprees into a mini-marathon. Don't search for the closest spot to the store. (And be honest...at this time of year you probably won't find one.) Park in the far corners and make the walk part of your physical activity.

Be creative in holiday food preparation.
There are plenty of resources out there that show healthy alternative recipes for the season. If you don't feel so inclined to search for those, just use your head.

There are plenty of low-fat and low-calorie substitutes that are amazingly tasty. Try using applesauce in place of oil in your favorite holiday breads; use egg substitutes in place of whole eggs; try plain nonfat yogurt in place of sour cream.

And remember if you stumble across something especially good, share it with your family and friends. And when you are invited to a party or get-together bring a healthy food as your contribution. That way at least you can be sure there's something “safe” for you on the spread of choices.

Keep things in perspective.
Overeating on one day or at one party won't make or break your eating plan. And it certainly won't make you gain weight! It takes days and days of overeating to gain weight. But if you slip up and overindulge at a holiday meal, put it behind you. Return to your usual (healthy) eating plan the next day without guilt or frustration. It's life, but it's not supposed to be a way of life!

Enjoy the real reason for the season. The birth of Christ is the real reason for the season and the reason we celebrate. God has done so much for me in my life that it's impossible to not simply give him thanks for all He's done.

Although I am mindful of that each and every day, this time of year seems especially easy to maintain my focus on that. And when you are enjoying your blessings with family and friends and have a heart of gratitude, somehow that extra serving doesn't seem quite so important.

My wish for each of you is that you will have a very Merry Christmas filled with much love and happiness!

It was a four-day trip which—although it was fun—also meant time away from family as well as away from my routine, which includes my workout regime.

The flight from Florida to California is a long one; and never seems to go smoothly. I had layovers and delays both on my way there and back. I traveled all day and when I arrived in L.A. Sunday night I was exhausted. The time difference doesn't help.

So when I awoke Monday morning I felt a bit like I had hit a brick wall. I began the debate in my mind...Well, if I stay in bed just a little longer it will be OK. Even if I miss my work out altogether I can justify it. After all, I am sort of on a vacation, right?

I don't know what it was that propelled me out of bed except for the fact that I really do take the importance of exercise seriously. I put on my workout clothes, threw my hair in a ponytail and pulled on a ball cap and went in pursuit of a fitness facility.

The hotel had a fully equipped gym, wonderful machines, and even an indoor track which I was able to take several laps around. When I was finished with my workout I felt exhilarated and strong. The others working out around me gave me inspiration and enthusiasm and I was so glad I had pushed myself out the door that morning. It made the difference in my whole day by giving me energy and focus.

The following day I knew I had a day full of phone interviews prior to the finale (somewhere around 22 actually). I knew it would be tight to get all of those in—sneak in a quick workout—and then get ready to go to the show.

But again something inside prodded me on beyond my fatigue. I hung up with my last interviewer and then dashed down to the gym for a quick round of cardio. I didn't stay long, but the physical activity gave me a charge that lasted me the rest of my very long day.

I share all this with you to say: “If there's a will, there's a way.” Don't give in to the temptation to make excuses—even when you are away from home. Exercising took a very small portion of my day and yielded so many benefits that made my stay in L.A. actually better. I know it sounds ironic to say that when you are exhausted—exercise. But it's true.

Now on to a little scoop about the finale for you Biggest Loser fans. (On a personal note, I was blessed to meet a personal hero of mine—recording artist, Mandisa. We spent a little time together and she was warm and gracious and beautiful. Sometimes when you hold a celebrity in such high esteem meeting them can be a letdown. This meeting however solidified my admiration! It was so exciting!)

The finale was—as usual—amazing! Each year I sit in the audience with other alumni and I just beam with pride over the accomplishments of the contestants (my baby brothers and sisters). It never ceases to amaze me what the human body can do.

The cast for Season 8 contained so many memorable contestants; each with special stories. Danny Cahill, became the biggest Biggest Loser of all time when he dropped 239 pounds, going from 430 to 191.

I continue to be so proud of the life-changing work the show does. But I remind myself (as well as those of you reading) that the power to make the change lies within each one of us.

Flash back to the Spring of 2006...I was a stay-at-home mom who had come to a place of desperation in my own life. I had always struggled with my weight but it had become an all-consuming force in my life by that time that I could no longer ignore. It was affecting everything in my life.

I cried out to God for help. And He answered in a most usual way, as many of you already know: through reality TV.

Being cast on Season 4 of The Biggest Loser was a life-changing experience to say the least. I was taken from all the comforts of home: my husband, my child, my family, my church...my FOOD. And I was thrust into a crazy world I had never known, in California, on the set of a TV show with a bunch of strangers; none of whom I knew or (at the time) trusted.

And to make things worse, I was morbidly obese and being expected to exercise for hours and hours a day. I was attempting physical things I never thought I could do. And every part of my body hurt as a result of it. I was beat down physical, emotionally and spiritually.

My progress was slow at first. As I have shared before, I only lost two pounds my first week on the show. Others were dropping 10, 20, 30 pounds...and me? Two. I was so discouraged. I questioned God and His plan. I felt alone and hopeless and still desperate.

Then God began to work.

I realized that He—in His perfect wisdom—had removed me from the place of my distractions and placed me in a “foreign land” (or so it felt) so that He had my complete attention. There's no way to convey in a short blog the lessons He taught me. But if I could sum it up it would be that all the failures and all the condemnation I placed upon myself throughout my lifetime was weighing me down. Yes, my physical weight was excessive and out of control. But it was a manifestation of a much deeper problem.

When I began to catch a glimpse of how God truly saw me—the Julie He had created—instead of the Julie I had created, everything began to change.

As the physical weight began to fall away, so did the emotional and spiritual weight of failure and insecurity. I reemerged from the process a new person—the one I believe God intended me to be all along.

Among the amazing opportunities I've received over the past year or so was the chance to write a book sharing my story. The REAL story of the transforming work God has done in my life. My story is so simple. I was given the chance of a lifetime. A chance to face my fears, fight my demons and change my life.

Some people called it a "fat chance" that I would ever even be cast on a reality show with over 250,000 other people vying for a spot. They said it was a "fat chance" that I could compete with 300- and 400-pound men who had a far greater likelihood of success through their weight-loss percentages. They said it was a "fat chance" that I'd ever lose the weight and change my life. But—with God's strength—that's exactly what I did.

So with that in mind, my book is entitled Fat Chance: Losing the Weight, Gaining My Worth and it was just released by GuidepostsBooks this week. I hope you'll have the opportunity to read it. Not because of anything extraordinary about me. But because I serve an amazing God who is ready and able to do transforming work in your life too!

Your weight may not even be physical. It may be a financial weight, or the weight of feeling insignificant in your own life. Or it may be a weight that someone else has placed on you. But whatever it is—I am here to say that you CAN lose that weight and gain your worth—the invaluable worth placed on you by God.

Don't listen when people tell you living the life of your dreams is a "fat chance." Let it be your second chance.

I can not believe how quickly the year has flown by! In just a few days we will celebrate Thanksgiving. I thank God each day for the many blessings He has given me. But this coming Thursday will be a special day when my focus may be a little more refined.

My plans for Thanksgiving are dramatically different in some respects than they use to be. Of course I will enjoy time with my family—and that includes good food.

One of my favorite of all time “treats” is my grandmother's homemade dressing. And—yes—I do allow myself to indulge a little on this holiday.

The way this Thanksgiving will be different from those in my past is that I will be running the Outback Distance Classic Half Marathon before our holiday meal. It's a fast and flat race that takes runners along a course near the St. John's River and through the heart of my hometown of Jacksonville, and thanks to its timing (it starts at 8:00 a.m.) this race offers runners a guilt-free way to enjoy their meals later in the day.

I consider this one of the “new traditions” I'm embracing since my new lifestyle change. I encourage you to find new healthy traditions for you and your family to enjoy this holiday season too!

If you want to remain in control at Thanksgiving, you might want to consider these tips:

Actually eat breakfast that day. Not only does breakfast give you the fuel you need to start your day but it will also keep you from feeling so ravenous when you sit dow for the “big meal” of the day.

If you exercise before you eat you it will actually suppress your appetite and boost your metabolism.

Drink 2-3 glasses of water before the feast begins.

Enjoy your favorite foods, but clearly set your limits. Only fill your plate once; and don't feel compelled to eat everything on your plate.

Remember, if you spare yourself from overeating on Thanksgiving Day, not only will you walk away from the holiday guilt free, but you can always enjoy a taste of leftovers the next day.

There are also healthy alternatives to so many of the traditionally high-caloric holiday treats we've become accustom to. Websites like eatingwell.com offer an abundance of options that you'll love.

So be sure to truly give thanks this week for all the blessings in your life. And I propose that thanks-giving not just be considered a holiday...but a way of life.

I'd love to hear from you.

God's Plans Are Better Than Ours

Did you know that November is National Adoption Month?

Adoption has a very significant place in the life of my family. If you know my story then you know that one of the main reasons I auditioned for The Biggest Loser was my intense desire to have another baby.

I had health problems that were made worse by my obesity and doctors told me not only was it unwise to try to conceive at my weight, but it was unlikely as well.

I sweated and slogged my way through eight months of the hardest physical and emotional work I had ever done in my life. At the finish line I knew there would be a pregnancy in my future. Well, as so often happens—God had other plans. And His plans were so much better than my own!

About a month after I returned from the show's finale, my husband and I were blessed to adopt a precious baby boy. We met him on the day he was born and brought him home when he was two days old. God's will and His timing intersected perfectly to orchestrate a miraculous story. (I share all the details in my new book Fat Chance: Losing the Weight Gaining My Worth released by GuidepostsBooks on December 1.)

So I wanted to bring some attention to National Adoption Month because I believe that however a child is welcomed into a family—whether it be through natural conception or by adoption—it's always a miracle.

National Adoption Month is actually dedicated to raising awareness about the adoption of children and youth from foster care. I had the privilege of speaking last week to a group at the Florida Baptist Children's Home. That organization does incredible work in helping children and families.

So how does adoption translate into the topic of health and wellness and personal change, since that's what I generally write about? It doesn't specifically. But I am living proof that God does have a plan for each of our lives. And that plan includes living the life of your dreams. It's a plan that will far exceed your own. Many times we need to make painful changes in order to be ready to receive the extraordinary life that lies ahead.

Listening to others share their stories the other night, about fostering children and adoption, made me even more thankful that God has allowed our family to be blessed in this special way. As I began to learn more about National Adoption Month, I was impressed to learn that the theme for this year is “You don't have to be perfect, to be the perfect parent.”

I thought that motivational statement translated into so many areas of our lives. You don't have to be perfect in what you attempt in life as long as you try your best and live with integrity and live intentionally.

So whether your desire is to lose weight, conquer some other battle in your life, or even foster or adopt a child—just remember you don't have to be perfect to still reap the benefits of success and fulfillment in what you achieve.
