Although I'm supposed to be working from home (and I am!), I can't help wanting to drop everything and pick up a particular book that I know for me would turn this ordinary snow day into something infinitely more magical.

The book of which I'm thinking is Winter's Tale, by Mark Helprin. It's a 750-page tale of heroism and fantasy, set in a wintry Manhattan where the rivers are frozen solid, the streets are paved with snow and the inhabitants of the city skate, sleigh and ski their way around. Though the book begins at the turn of the 19th century and finishes at the turn of the 20th, the author weaves it in such a way as to make it timeless.

The focal point of this complex story is a love so powerful that it transcends time and thwarts death. It starts with the improbable love story of a poor Irish burglar and a wealthy young woman dying of tuberculosis at the end of the 19th century. Her death inspires a series of magical events that takes the living, breathing city and all its inhabitants and brings it closer to the Divine.

My father gave me a copy of this book a few years ago with a glowing recommendation. He confessed that he had read it about fifteen years earlier, during the painful months my grandmother (his mother) lay dying in a hospital bed. Day after day, he would sit by the bedside and read it aloud to her, praying that the magic of the story could somehow work a miracle.

Though she did not recover, I suppose it did work a miracle. She died peacefully and without pain from a devastating disease, knowing that her son loved her dearly. Time did stop...long enough for mother and son to forge an eternal bond they had not previously been able to make.

I suppose too that it is easy to forget that there is Divine magic in real life, and in the real New York City, where I'm constantly running from obligation to obligation with tunnel vision. If I just give myself the chance to pause my timeline and look out the window at my beautiful snow-covered neighborhood, I'd see it right there in front of my eyes.

Winter's Tale is a beautiful story that will inspire you to cherish every moment and recognize the magic in your own life. I can't recommend it enough.

If you're a parent, these last few weeks have been devoted to helping your kids begin a new school year. My son, Luke, just started his second year of preschool, and it hasn't gone smoothly.

Each morning he whines and moans about his horrible situation, and after dropping him off, I internally whine and moan, convinced I'm a horrible parent who surely should be sending her child to a better, funner, more likeable school.

But I just got my weekly email from Half Full: Science for Raising Happy Kids, and as always, it made me a happier parent. This week's article is about the importance of letting children experience pain and difficulty, and how it can help them grow.

Now, just as any parent understands the joy and challenges of back-to-school season, we all know that there are a million books, websites, magazines, products and lecturers out there with opinions about how to raise kids. It's great, but it can be overwhelming, too. What I like about this particular blog is that all its advice is science-based.

The person behind the blog is Christine Carter, a sociologist and the executive director of UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center. And she's a mom. As she says in her online bio, she was doing all this research, and realized it would be great if parents could use it.

So what will you have access to? Articles about praising; handling public bad behavior; marriage success; the dangers of threats and bribes; and how to foster resiliance, gratitude, kindness and optimism. And much more, all in a friendly, down-to-earth tone.

As for Luke? I'm hoping that suffering through preschool gives him some grit!

If you don't know who Miley Cyrus is, welcome to the world above your rock. She is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, but more importantly, Miley is the reigning teen queen.

As the star of Disney television show Hannah Montana, about a student who is secretly a pop superstar, Miley has ruled the 'tween world with albums and films as Hannah, Miley and both.

The first hit single from her latest movie, Hannah Montana: The Movie is called "The Climb."

Now believe me, I was just like you. A month ago at an all-girls birthday weekend in Maine, a few friends with pre-teen daughters played "The Climb" and sang their hearts out to it while the rest of us looked on in horror. But then I stumbled on "The Climb" video one too-early morning, and, now actually hearing the lyrics, I thought, Wow. This is good. Really good.

The refrain?

"There's always gonna be another mountain/I'm always gonna wanna make it move/Always gonna be an uphill battle/Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose/Ain't about how fast I get there/Ain't about what's waiting on the other side/It's the climb."

In her latest book, Finding Grace, Donna VanLiere shares her true story of "losing your way in life...and finding it again."

You may know VanLiere from her popular Christmas Hope books (and the TV movies made from them). Like that series, Finding Grace is beautifully written, but this is a much more personal tale.

VanLiere recounts how her childhood innocence was stolen from her by an act of violation, and how her life's struggles always come back to that first terrible pain. With humor, insight and the help of scripture, she describes her self-discovery as a writer and as a woman of faith.

But the most poignant arc in Finding Grace is VanLiere's journey to motherhood. For anyone who's ever struggled to have a child—or anyone who can empathize with that struggle—her accounts of fertility treatments, raised expectations and dashed hopes will certainly ring true.

Without revealing too much, let's just say that the story of how she did become a mother is truly inspiring.

Finding Grace is a quick read, but it'll be slow to fade from memory.

Meet Sheena Matheiken. She enlisted her pal Eliza Starbuck to design a simple black dress, which was then duplicated for each day of the week.
The Dash

The Dash

With the passing of cultural icons like Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon and Michael Jackson in the last week, many of us have been reflecting on what we knew of their lives and how they impacted us—Farrah with her beauty and poise, Ed with his ability to make us laugh, and Michael, though he had a troubled personal life, with the ability to inspire us with music and dance.

And while we ponder the contributions made by those we've lost, many of us also think about our own lives, and how we are spending them. Are we loving each other? Are we doing good and making a difference? And most importantly, are we living up to the expectations we have for ourselves? Only we can answer to those questions for ourselves.

The answers can be frustrating or even scary at times when compounded with the sadness of loss. When that happens in my life, I try to remember a poem I once heard in the eulogy of my dear Aunt Rae. I find great consolation in the positive thoughts that it evokes. I hope it may inspire you as well.

The Dash
By Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone, from the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears,
But said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own; the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard… are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left. You could be at dash mid-range.

If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real,
And always try to understand the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more,
And love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile…
Remembering that their special dash might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy’s being read with your life’s actions to rehash…
Would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?

Whether it's the melody itself or the harmony of the singer's voice or the lyrics that stand out from the chords beneath them, music resonates and reminds, it stirs up memories, feelings and possibilities—it's a language all its own.

I have to admit that up until the time I had to choose a major in college, I wanted to be a singer. Not because of the fame. Or the money. Or the masses of fans watching. Because I genuinely love to sing—and that hasn't changed.

What did change over the years was the vision of that dream coming true—my practical, reasonable side kicked in, knowing I would have to work in the "real world," make money, pay bills, be independent. And unlike many of those embarrassing auditioners on American Idol, I was smart enough to know that although I have a decent voice, it's not groomed enough for a record label's approval...or Simon Cowell.

So I let that dream slip away to focus on writing and editing, which has led me here to GUIDEPOSTS. And while I enjoy blogging and posting video, finding inspiring stories and hearing what you all have to say about your dreams, there's a tiny part of me that still wishes I had a microphone in my hand.

Lately, I've been playing "Seasons of Love" by The Shiny Toy Guns on my iPod. I play it while I run or while I walk to work. And sometimes I'll play it twice in a row, just because I love the sound of this song and its lyrics so much that 3 minutes isn't long enough for me.

When I find a song that affects me like this one, I see scenes played out in my head while I'm listening to it, I remember people from my past... and if I close my eyes, I can feel my feet on an aged stage, lights illuminating my hair, darkness blanketing the crowd in front of me and my lips moving as if I'm meant to sing it myself.

Listen to "Seasons of Love" and let me know what it reminds you of. Or if you have a song that resonates with you, share!

Bad Dad Roland, "father of four and husband of one," started the podcast back in 2006. He's apparently called Bad Dad because he hears it often gets from his kids. But you quickly realize Roland is not bad at all, but simply a guy who wants to improve and grow. Download his show for any dad who needs to know he's not alone.

Often Bad Dad pairs up with another dad to create Daddy Dialogues—very funny, real conversations about everything from job passion to recession-era haircuts. In particular, he has a great rapport with Vinny of DadRivisted.com. Their exchanges are like NPR's "Car Talk" for dads.

And for those dads who like to crank up a podcast in the car (perhaps to drown out the sound of screaming children?), no worries, it's rated G. G for Great!

These days being a consumer can be, well, consuming. We are now blessedly, yet overwhelmingly, inundated with tons of information about food and products. Is it organic? Toxic? Are my dollars going to a sweat shop? Will this pollute the air?

It can seem impossible to know if what you're buying will hurt you, your family, society or the environment. That's why you might want to visit GoodGuide.com, "the world's largest source of reliable information on the health, environmental and social impacts of the products in your home."

View ratings of household cleaners, toys, food and personal health care products to see where they fall in terms of health/nutritional, social and environmental performance, to match up your purchases with your priorities.

The site also features sections on learning about issues (what does "organic" mean), and relevant news (Venezuela bans Coke Zero). And there's a great tool for keeping track of which products you'll buy or avoid.

I looked up my son's favorite treat—an organic chocolate milk—cringed at its rating, and found a better alternative. Now that's a good guide!

Why Do You Love June?

Well, Memorial Day has come and gone and June has officially begun. In my mind, that means summer is here—even if the calendar says it doesn't arrive for another few weeks.

As I was working away on my computer this morning, my Twitter feed caught my eye when Guideposts Blog Network contributor Jason Boyett (someone I personally follow on Twitter because he has such great blog posts), "tweeted" the five reasons he loves June. Intrigued... I clicked on the link.

While reading how June changes his lifestyle—and mindset—I began to think about how I feel about this lovely month and felt inspired to share my five reasons with you.

5 Reasons I Love June

1. I can breathe easier when I run. There's something about the June air here in the New York area that makes me happy. Yes, we get the occasional muggy summer day when all you can do is sit still and hope to feel cool, but for the most part, the sun and wind work together to give my lungs a healthy charge while I'm running along the river. It doesn't have that winter bite that causes me to cough and I actually enjoy exercising as a result.

2. There are flowers everywhere. When June rolls around I seem to notice the colorful blooms around me a lot more. Maybe it's because I've just started walking outside for longer periods of time as the weather allows it, or maybe it's because I've started wearing brighter colors as I pull outfits from my summer wardrobe, but the fuschia, lavendar, yellow and red florals that blanket the parks and gardens I pass seem more vibrant than ever.

3. My toes feel perfect nestled in the sand. Anyone who knows me well knows I'm a beach lover. I've been sticking my toes in the grainy sands of beaches along the East coast since I was born, and it will always be a place that I associate with family, friends, happiness—and Grandma's blueberry pie (a great way to end a long beach day). I usually kick off my beach weekends in late May, but June is when I embrace the salty smell and rolling waves as I close my eyes and let the sun pour down on my shoulders.

4. I eat healthier. Sure, Grandma's pie is on my summer menu, but for the most part, I tend to mind my meals a bit more when summer rolls around. The fruits are juicier, watermelon is all that more appealing and I'm more apt to choose things like salad, veggies and smoothies at the grocery store.

5. I feel happier. It seems silly that the start of a certain month can change my mood, but when the sun is shining through my cracked office window and my sandals remind me that my winter boots are hiding in the back of my closet, I feel a sense of calm. I guess you could say the start of summer is like a mini new year for me. It sheds light on new possibilities, brings life to plans and ideas that I may have been avoiding for awhile and gets me out and about, breathing in the reality that seasons really can change more than just the weather.

Thanks, June.

Now... what are your five reasons?

Then I got a hold of it. I'm weeks away from turning 40 and thought a little self-discovery might be in order.

The book delivered on its promise of being "a provocative, probing and personal expedition into your mind, heart and soul."

Authors Ilene Segalove and Paul Bob Velick provide topics that really get you thinking. From the chapter titled "Yourself"—List the heroic feats you've performed; from "Daily Life"—list all the items in your wallet; from "Change"—list all the times you went off the beaten path; from "Greater Truths"—list the real reasons you are inspired to stay alive.

It's a great way to jumpstart your imagination or to explore what makes you tick. Peering into my past, my personality, my beliefs and my glove-compartment, I discovered my 40 years had been pretty rich—and I was glad I had a place to list it all!

That's what this video did for me. It gave me five and a half feel-good minutes. Not only because it's one of my favorite songs of all time, but because of the mission behind it—bringing the world together through one thing we all understand: music, and one thing we all want to feel: peace.

From the award-winning documentary, Playing For Change: Peace Through Music, comes the first of many "songs around the world" being released independently.

Featured is a cover of the Ben E. King classic "Stand by Me," sung (and played) by musicians around the world, adding their part to the song as it traveled the globe.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and share it with others like we did here in the office.

There's something so simple about its message, something raw that spoke to me. Someone looking for that other soul to stand beside them, feel alive and weather any emotion, good or bad. Someone to "stand in the center of the fire" without hesitating. Someone to share life, loss and love.

It inspired me this week... to think about companionship at its very core, to take a moment to stop and really think about that one other person I'd want standing beside me.

And now I'm passing it on to you.

—Megan Cherkezian

The Invitation
By Oriah Mountain Dreamer, Canadian teacher and author

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dreams
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon...
I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life's betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your
fingers and toes
without cautioning us to
be careful
be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.

If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand on the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
"Yes."

It doesn't interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after a night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn't interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the center of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.

From Dreams Of Desire published by Mountain Dreaming, © 1995 by Oriah House.
